After months nurturing -- from the placement of seeds to the careful watering of plants to the fending off of hungry birds and diseases -- it all comes down to this: the sauce. Growing the tomatoes is the most challenging part. Making them into sauce is as easy as pie. (Pizza pie, anyone?). . .

I am going to post photos in a few days.
Yesterday I went on a tour of the Oaxaca Ethno-Botanical Garden. Twice a week the Garden offers a two hour tour in English. The guide was an American woman named Carol Turkenik. She seemed to be very knowledgeable about the "ethno" aspects of the Garden. Uses of plants and the place of the various plants in the culture, history, and religious life of the area. I really enjoyed the tour. . . .

A few weeks ago, I bought some new shoes. Crocs™ had come out with a true white professional closed-toe style and based on my love of my celery green Crocs™, I wanted a pair for work. As I was browsing the other styles they made, I saw some sandals I liked in black, so I ordered those, too. I love all my Crocs™ - they're so comfortable - and today I found another reason to like them. They work great under water. . . .

There's a nip in the air tonight and the day has been overcast and rainy. The temperatures didn't climb much above 70º (21ºC) all day. It seems much too soon to feel this much like Fall. Our outdoor wood furnace is running and keeping the chill out of the house. We have plenty of slab wood to burn because Ross and some helpers have been sawing out a log cabin that his brother is going to build for a client. Normally we'd let the furnace go out during the summer months, but not this year. Tonight I'm thankful for that.
Like many of you, I'm feeling rather blue with thoughts of summer's ending. It always makes me sad to know the flowers will soon be finished and the long winter will be upon us once more.
With that in mind, I've been working outside as much as possible because there's still plenty to do in the gardens...always! It's a never-ending job.....but I love every moment of it.
The phlox continue to bloom profusely.....

A new book I'm reading THE PILATES PROMISE by Alycea Ungaro, says that weeding engages the entire torso, including the obliques and is more effective than a typical crunch which targets only the upper-ab muscle rectus abdominis . I hate crunches but I don't mind weeding !. . .

It seems a bit soggy here, but we don't have the heavy rains that they have suffered in other parts of Ohio. Usually, because of the high water table, if we get lots of rain there is ponding, but we are not experiencing that. The weatherman says that because the ground was dry the rain sheeted off into the waterways. Likely so. . . .

The US Arboretum advises on "Dividing Daylilies" : "The best time to divide daylilies is shortly after they have finished flowering in late summer to early fall."
It has a step by step how-to with pictures and method. So if you have some dayilies to divide, take a look at this helpful resource. Now is the time!
* can't remember where I got the picture :( - but it shows off the beauty of the daylily to perfection.

My sweet kitty and I love to look outside; it is one of our favorite pastimes right now. I'm not a T.V. watcher, for one thing there isn't anything I care to watch and another thing is I get too bored just sitting there. You would think it would bore me to just sit and look out the window but it doesn't. It is fascinating to sit and see the birds, butterflies and bees. The rain that we received over the last couple of days has renewed some gardening interest. I had to run a quick errand today, I hadn't planned on doing any shopping, but for some reason the car drove me to one of the home centers. I'm so glad I went! I had been wanting to get more of the Russian sage and I bought three. I planted my first one last fall and I have enjoyed it so much. It did great through the drought and of course I love anything purple. They had this beautiful hibiscus ('Pinot Grigio') with flowers almost the size of a dinner plate. I couldn't pass that up. . . .

I was driven inside half an hour ago by an armed band of mosquitos that escaped from a Yard Guard commercial. They were small but nasty buggers and I'm still itching both forearms which were uncovered as I tried to snap a few pictures in fading sunlight. My Dad used to keep a bottle of witch hazel by "his" kitchen chair so he could douse himself when situations like this arose. The only witch hazel I really like is a daylily by that name. It's been blooming for more than two weeks now and it probably has another week to go, maybe a little more. If you'd like to see a picture, let me know. . . .

Some of my readers who have journeyed with Gardening Tips 'n Ideas would recall that this blog started off with a very different domain name. It's inception was as Gardening4Dummies.com.
Six months later, I was sent a very official email requesting me to abandon this name because it contravened applicable trademarks. I obliged even though a few bloggers recommended I fight it. The reason for my decision was because I never meant to use someone else's marketing efforts to quickly lift my rankings - I just hadn't thought the issue through. . .

More and more of my beloved veggies have disappeared! The beans, sweet potatoes and cucumbers have lost ALL of their leaves. Tomatoes and zucchinis have been munched, along with all of the watermelons and cantaloupe. The only thing that hasn't been eaten is the squash from my last post!I correctly blamed the melon destruction on the raccoons, but now I know that THIS is who ate the rest! In this picture, he is eating clover but I can safely say that a groundhog's favorite food is anything from the vegetable garden!. . .

We've had a nice long hot summer, along with spurts of intense humidity.
But today, not so much and spitting rain once in a while.
I made a quick tour of the garden to make sure everything is as it should be. Scored fifty percent on that one.
A passing bird apparently dropped a Sunflower seed in amongst the geraniums. Pretty little thing will have a tough time trying to grow big and tall in that small container.
