pinkcottonblossom

Since I found a listing for cotton seeds in the Pine Tree Garden catalog a couple of years ago, I have been trying to grow it in my garden. Last year, I started it too early indoors, and the plant was spindly and weak when I put it out. This year, I planted later and got the plants in the ground about the right time. They didn’t do much until we had the first hot spell of the summer, and then shot up about 8 inches in a few days. Well, it is September 2, and I am just getting blossoms, so don’t know if I will see any cotton bolls this year either. . .

Here’s the view of the lift bridge from the top of the tower.

Oldfields-Lilly House and Gardens

Robin's Nesting Place via Robin's Nesting Place on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

My daughter had Friday off, so she and I went to see the Oldfields-Lilly house and gardens. She had been once before with a group of girls from church. I hadn't even known it was there until she told me about it. This property has recently become a national historic landmark. The property was once owned by the Lilly family of Eli-Lilly Pharmaceuticals. They donated the land to the Art Association of Indianapolis which used the property to build the Indianapolis museum of Art. . . .

This may seem like a quaint idea to some, but I am quite curious - has anyone ever planted on the moon or picked herbs.vegetables, or fruit on the appropriate moon phase? If you have followed this system, what sort of results did you achieve?

Here is my September 1st contribution:

The World is so empty if one thinks only of the mountains, rivers, and cities;
but to know someone who thinks and feels with us, and who, though distant
is close to us in spirit, this makes the earth for us an inhabited garden.

That'd be finding genetic anomalies in my lawn, as in, 4 leaf clovers.

I know, I'm a freak. I can be just walking along, look down and pluck a 4 leafer from the ground. Drives people nuts, especially the family. . . .

More Longwood Annuals

This is the last batch of photos from my recent visit to Longwood Gardens, where I spent my time in the annual section of the Idea Garden. Here's a map of the Idea Garden so you can see what it contains. Borage

The Balcony Garden via The Balcony Garden on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

Borage. The very name has me shaking with fear. My garden in London is overrun with the stuff, and it's all my fault. I planted it about fifteen years ago, because I thought the flowers were pretty - but before I knew how invasive it was. It self seeds like crazy. And it has long thick taproots which, in an established plant can go down for two feet or more, making digging it out extremely hard work. . . .

My London Garden

The Balcony Garden via The Balcony Garden on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

Long time, no post. I spent the whole of August at home in London, doing up the house and garden ready for the next tenants. The house had to be cleaned and decorated throughout, and the garden was full of weeds, so it was pretty hard work. I'd intended to post daily while I was there, but found myself unexpectedly cut off from the internet - I managed to check messages once, early on, when I was at a friend's house, but that was it. . .

Nemesia

Digital Flower Pictures.com via Digital Flower Pictures.com on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

Nemesia
Nemesia 'Sunsatia Mango'
(ne-MEE-see-uh)
Scrophulariaceae (skrof-yoo-larr-ee-AY-see)
Synonyms: Inupyel

Every year I plant about 15 large containers that act as a barrier for a steep drop-off. I usually go down to a couple of nurseries (both retail and wholesale) and get a collection of different annuals. I always get some stalwarts like Petunias, Marigolds and that type of thing and then I try a few new things. This year among the new plants I bought, with the hope they would do well were this new Nemesia and even though I didn’t know it from the scientific name of Erysimum, some Wallflower. Both turned out very well with the added bonus of being fragrant. . . .
