Summer Weather Lingers On

Dirt Under My Nails via Dirt Under My Nails on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

It was a beautiful last weekend of summer. The warm temperatures are going to stick around for most of this week too, although the nights are the typical autumn coolness. In fact, when I was out canoeing on Saturday, the early trees were starting to turn at the lake.

The garden is stuck between a sense of urgency to get it all accomplished before winter sets in, and not wanting to get it done too early so that everything sprouts and is killed. Still some of the clean up can get done.

Black Swallowtail Caterpillars

My Iowa Garden via My Iowa Garden on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

After seeing a "garden for the senses" at the Omaha Zoo last fall I decided to plant one this spring, I have really enjoyed it. I planted all kinds of herbs, scented geraniums, a jasmine plant, cayenne pepper and some ornamental grass. I planted parsley and fennel with the hope of getting some butterfly eggs and it worked!!!! Our grandsons spent this past weekend with us, we were outside looking around, I was pulling leaves from the plants in my garden for the senses for them to smell, I was getting the "that stinks" remarks when my oldest grandson discovered the caterpillars of the Black Swallowtail Butterfly, I was so excited, of course we got the camera right away. . . .

Bartered apples

Horticultural via Horticultural on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

Without room for any apple trees myself, it's fantastic to barter for some fruit from people who do. I got one bagful from a colleague of Rick's, to whom we've promised a pumpkin in return. She also gave us some eggs from her two chickens so I'll have to make sure she gets the pick of the pumpkin crop. Another bagful came from an aunt who lives in London: this wasn't a barter exchange as such, but she did get a copy of my book in return! These, she told me, were James Grieve. I had never heard of this...

Unbearably hot, but we got a bit of rain

Country Gardener via Country Gardener on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

It was bloody hot yesterday, about as hot as it gets here on the worst days in mid-summer, about 90 degrees F. But with the humidity, it felt a lot hotter: just what our trees needed in the face of the long drought of 2007, which still ongoing. . . .

Vilas Turkey

Blue Ridge blog via Blue Ridge blog on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

Turkey_blog
Not long ago, about thirty turkeys came through our woods and pecked their way around our front yard. I was camped out on the deck enjoying a slow morning with Harley. As I pet Harley's head, the two of us regarded the birds with lazy curiosity. Harley was decidedly happier to be my little headrubbin' piggy than to chase the silly fowl back into the woods as she normally does.
This photo is not of those turkeys, because I was particularly slack that day. Instead, these turkey were seen yesterday afternoon in a field in Vilas, NC.

That's really all there is to say about this time of year.

I call it the 'inbetweener' season. Time to clean up the garden and flowerbeds and get out all those half finished quilts. Yet, the temps aren't playing fair and there are still things going strong, pushing away the urge to tidy up. There's still time. Summer hasn't vanished yet. But, it will. Soon. And that white shit will be everywhere. Soon. Ugh - the inbetweener. . . .

A group of about 400 of us from across the nation and the world will gather in Oklahoma City, OK to tour gardens, network, and dish the dirt. OK City is NOT my first choice of destination. Besides no direct flights from here to there and it not being part of my editorial coverage area, when I mention the destination no one who hears it says, "Gee, I wish I was going!" I'm keeping an open mind though and expect to thoroughly suck up everything a can possible learn at the event. . . .

I saw this Aster at the Vanderbilt Mansion in Hyde Park. It was marked ‘Professor Kippenburg’, however, after a little research I found out that is a blue cultivar and not a deep pink one. Florida gardening via Florida gardening on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

I finally hit the big time! Can you imagine opening a well respected magazine and finding your name in print? All I can say is Wow! Thanks to Susan Myers of iloveplants.com and GardenBargainsOnline.com, Florida Gardening Magazine's October/November issue lists several Florida garden blogs and this one is included. Huge thanks to Susan for mentioning me and many of our fellow Florida bloggers.

By the way, Florida Gardening magazine is one of the premier sources of information on gardening in Florida. When I relocated here over ten years ago, I had a very difficult time finding a recurring resource for gardening. When I found this one I became a regular subscriber and have never looked back. Happy Florida Gardening.

Hard Knowledge

An Iowa Garden via An Iowa Garden on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

Our woods lies on the southern slope of a modest hill, with a dammed pond at the bottom; a benificent and benign spot for gardening as far as the climate goes... but then there is the soil. Iowa is known for its rich, loamy black soil, but the riches are not universal. When I started digging on our land, I found a peculiar and frustrating phenomenon: there is a layer of sticky clay on top (which hardens in dry weather to something akin to asphalt); below the clay is about a foot of sand, and below that is a layer of black, finely grained soil. . . .

I'm so glad I brought the Monarch caterpillar in the house yesterday. This morning, when I came downstairs to check on it, it was hanging in the 'J' position, preparing to pupate. I had put the tree branch in there to provide a hanging spot for it, but he attached himself to the panty hose covering I'd put over the bowl. . . .

A Late Bloomer

Our Little Acre via Our Little Acre on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

I was working in the garden a bit today, even though we're headed towards near record-breaking temperatures over 90° and the mosquitoes are still conducting their all-out assault on us. (Give it up already!) I was checking the seed pods on the milkweed plant that we'd relocated to our garden from the banks of Cunningham's Ditch and I couldn't believe what I saw. A very large Monarch Caterpillar! This was the same plant where a previous caterpillar had fallen prey to predators.

Since I never did see any of the other caterpillars pupate, I decided to bring this guy inside. I'd successfully kept a Painted Lady caterpillar in the house this winter, all the way through butterfly stage, so I feel confident that I can do the same with this Monarch. I'll release it when it's the proper time so that it can make its long trip to Mexico for the winter.

Ready, set, this is my favourite garden from tours this summer. It's on the edge of a very small town, on a hill over looking farm fields. The couple bought the dilapidated house 20+ years ago, got it in shape and then created this beautiful garden. I'm sure the look of the garden is strongly affected by the backdrop of the farm fields. This year, it was the year of wheat, and what could look more beautiful behind a long, long bed of hollyhocks? The whole garden was breathtaking. . . .
