It’s snowing in Seattle as I leave my grandfather this afternoon. What a crazy week I’ve had. Even the weather has varied considerably. Here are a few pictures of my grandfather’s community gardens as the snow begins to fall.
Pic: Ornamental winter plants.
Pic: Beautiful winter color in the community pea patch (anyone know what it is?).

It's that time of year again. People give, get and just buy for themselves, an amaryllis bulb. The pictures are beautiful. The ones you see at friends houses always look absolutely breathtaking! So, why not give it a try? Why not? Here are some hints to help you get started. . . .
Everything is covered in snow! I haven't left the house today because I nearly killed myself last night on the ice. It's a death trap out there! The funniest site I've seen in a long time was watching my Mr. W last night while he was trying to walk up the handicap ramp onto the sidewalk. He was plastered to the side of the building like Spider man. It was so hilarious! He was really having a hard time - his feet are size 14's! It's hard for him. But alas we made it home safe. . . .

Bewteen politics, work and travel, my orchids have been abandoned for a while. Actually, lots of intersting stuff flowered, but I did not catch it in time. In particular, my Sophronitis coccinea aurea flowered again as the plant grows vigorously. Below some nice flowers Cattleya Jenmanii definietly likes my greenhouse. . . .

Just two more to go. I'll probably post the trays of 3" and 2" but it's too much work to write out the ID's. These trays only have 12 each so it's manageable.

We’ve been out of town again. This time to Fredericksburg. It seemed like everyone else was there at the same time. They happened to be having a big [...]

Look. Marie went out in search of pretty pictures for the first time in several weeks.
'bout time.
At 8:00 this morning I kissed my husband on the cheek and said,
"Gonna go find me some good light, baby."
Just so you know, I was in my pajamas when I took these photos. I did not brush my hair or teeth because light doesn't wait for vanity or grooming.
It was Sunday and I was thinking about how my perfect church would congregate outdoors.
As the toes of my sneaks were muddied tiptoe-ing around groundhog holes and my pj's were snagged crossing barbed wire fences, I thought of God and how if one couldn't find him in a great big field in Valle Crucis, then one might'n never find him.
Organized religion ain't my thing, but that doesn't make me a non-believer.
God is good.
You just gotta take some time and look-see for yourself.

Usually the leaves of the oaks around the neighborhood just turn tan and brown but this year was an exception. All the oaks showed great color...for oaks that is. Funny but the past two years all the oaks produced a tremendous amount of acorns but I haven't seen a single acorn on our tree this year. Last year I picked up 2 three gallon kitty litter buckets full. . . .

I knew it was coming. Everyone who owns a greenhouse in a cold weather area experiences this. It was inevitable, but finally happened. I awoke Friday morning to outside temperatures at 16 degrees F, and as I fumbled in the dark kitchen for the coffee pot, I glanced, as I always do, with one eye open, through the porch window across towards the greenhouse just to see if the unthinkable happened. I usually see a puff of steam coming from the exhaust of the furnace near the roof, and even through the whole glass structure is frosted over, the corner near the furnace is always clear and melted near the peak. But not today. The entire house was silent and frosted over, and I knew what had happened. . . .

6:30 PM has already arrived and it seems like just minutes ago that I looked out the office window at 6:30 this morning and saw the sun screaming through the trees and turning the clouds red like the pine grosbeaks that visited the bird feeders a few days back. It was a powerful color, bumpy in places, and interrupted by gray-blue background skies. . . .

I can’t wait until Summer comes again so that I can see my very tall rose bush, it must be 10 feet tall and 5 feet wide, full of blooms. It’s first flush of blooms each year in late spring or early summer is just stunning! It’s quite a sight to see. . . .

We were warned. The National Weather Service predicted we'd be getting freezing rain and up to a half-inch of ice by noon today, and this time they were right. The rain kept falling and the ice kept building up. While this makes for great picture-taking opportunities, it can also cause car accidents and power outages. . . .

Flowering Maple, Parlor Maple, Chinese Bell Flower, Chinese Lantern - all names for this easy-to-grow member of the Malvaceae family and genus Abutilon. This one opened just today and I love the papery petals with prominent veining. In other colors, such as the red and orange ones I also have, the veins are more noticeable than in this lemony yellow. . . .

I am wiped out. We went to Cacheaplaooza II and really didn't
do much geocaching, just some hiking, hanging out, eating and a lot of relaxing. I don't know why I am so tired though! Chris took a lot of good pictures and I will share
those first. He got some really awesome bird shots while I was sleeping in my chair at the main pavilion. That's what I get for snoozing!
I think this is one of my favorites he took. It is an osprey! The day before we saw one sitting in a pine tree and it took off with a huge fish!

This is not about Rosemary Verey, or about form made visible by the disappearance of foliage, or about subtle colors and interesting bark or berries. This is about weeds; those pernicious winter weeds that, believe it or not, are out there setting seed as I write. . . .
are carrot tops edible?
I got soem wonderful organic carrots. Is there anything unhealthy about eating the tops? Thety look so wonderfully green, and healthy.

I admit to occasionally liking to roll the dice on a little plant of dubious hardiness, on the off chance it might survive in our inclement climate. I normally am fairly sensible about choosing what to try (I actually do a little research, so I'm a little more sophisticated than just throwing stuff at a wall to see what sticks). However, I'll admit that with this little bulb I've probably thrown the dice off the table and out the window. It's Cyrtanthus breviflorus, a small amaryllid that grows in the uplands of South Africa. Ten inches or so tall, with cute little yellow flowers and grass-like foliage. . . .
