Two Heathers

Snappy's Gardens Blog via Snappy's Gardens Blog on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

The Heathers today after the frost had melted away. I'm going to Paris tomorrow so the blog will be chilling.
I bought a birds gourmet feast today for the garden birds.
Wild bird seed mix, sunflower seeds, ten fat balls, and two new feeders.
These have been hung up. I hope the birds will find them when I am away.
Will post again on the Fifteenth. I hope to have photos :)

PARAGUAYOS - or Doughnut Peach.

Last year we found these funny little fruits in the market. They look like a pale squashed peach and as long as the fruit was soft and yielded a little to the touch (matura) they tasted 10 times better than a peach or nectarine. We asked Gonzalo if he could graft some onto a bitter almond tree and this week he obliged. Down came most of the branches of the almond, cuts were made at the top of what was left, little twiglets put in, wet bandages wrapped round, then sealed with plastic and hey presto, fingers crossed these unprepossessing twigs will start growing and maybe next year we'll have some fruit.

Navasota Blooms

Southern Bulb Company via Southern Bulb Company on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

I remember in college I would sometimes go through a little town south of college station called Navasota. That is, it seemed little, but I have traveled to many different places and always run in to somebody from that sleepy town or know someone that lives there. I passed through there with Brad once. We were in uniform and taking our dates to the ball that night to dinner in Brenham before returning to the campus for the festivities. It was during the Festival of Flags, and there was food, music, and dancing. That was almost five years ago and here Brad and I are still working together.

So, I love this shot of a cemetary spiderweb. Just look for a moment at how this web is constructed. Now, imagine you had to make a web like this from string to win a million dollars...I couldn't do it. This little spider with a brain half the size of a sesame seed, made this. He knew which blades of grass to use......he knew how many rays to spin.....he knew how many segemnts needed to connect each of the rays...... He knew the middle had to be different (for reason I don't know) from the outer part. . . .

Noon Light in February

danielle's garden blog via danielle's garden blog on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

I've been trying to pay attention to how my garden is lighted (...sunlight that is...) during different times of the season at different times of day.

Here is a long view of my tiny edible garden at 12:00pm in early February. You can see the shadow of the house on the grass does not interfere all with the garden. This is the north fence of my home and you can see my neighbor's yellow house on the right. The poor frizzle top palm tree is up by our driveway. Off in a distance, you can see our hurricane shutters stored above my garden bench.

From Strawberries to Tomatoes

danielle's garden blog via danielle's garden blog on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

Remember my recent posting about all the plants in my garden that didn't do so well? Here's another one that didn't make it. I cut off long runners from a strawberry plant from the side garden, and planted them in the strawberry pot near the front door. It took them three days, but they shrivvled up and died. I have no idea why...I did everything right. Oh well.

The new "Patio Tomato" plant is from Home Depot. I planted it pretty deeply because you are always supposed to plant some of the stem in the ground so the plant forms better roots. I had lots of success growing them like this last year. . . .

We bought our son a gorgeous Labrador Retriever for Christmas! He is now almost 13 weeks old (current photo to come) and he is chewing on every plant in the backyard!!! He completely severed the clematis and has gnawned down the honeysuckle to such an extent that I doubt it will recover. He pulled down all the beautiful ivy creeping up our 6foot privacy fence...the only plants he hasn't bothered are the roses for obvious reasons. . . .

A Magical Discovery

Simply Susan! via Simply Susan! on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

My daughter and I were walking in the woods behind our home when we happened upon seven zebra longwing butterflies hanging from an oak branch. They were folded up flat and blended in so well that it is amazing that she saw them. It was a dreary day and the woods were dark from the thick canopy, and they seemed to be napping. At first we thought they had just hatched from their cocoons, but we couldn't find any remnants of them.

We startled them and they began to flutter all around us. I tried to snap a photo of them but it was impossible to see them in flight, so I settled for the one below as he settled back on the oak limb. We were totally delighted with our magical discovery.
