There are snowdrops under this snow
Some of you, I am sure, thought I was being overly pessimistic when I said the snowdrops sprouting in January wouldn’t be blooming in a month. As you can...

February is a good month for gardens in South Florida. My multi color bougainvillea is putting on a show. Two weeks ago it looked dead not a leaf or flower on her and then boom. . . .

I've had a lot of passions throughout the course of my life. First this, then that, but always something that seems to take up a majority of my time, thoughts, and energy. For the past few years, it's been gardening, but in the 1980s it was counted cross-stitch. I made many things - pictures, Christmas ornaments, baby bibs, and a Precious Moments quilt for Kara's bed.

I received an email yesterday announcing a sighting of trout lilies in bloom at Audubon’s Cedar Ridge Preserve.
The trout lily or white dog-tooth violet is always among the first wildflowers to bloom in the spring. It is a tiny plant that grows on hillsides and ravines in the damp woods. The name refers to [...]

Last weekend, my husband and I spent the morning pruning the timber trees at our tree farm. I love to prune. It is an art and a science: studying the tree to determine the dominant leader, envisioning the natural balance of the tree, thinking about the affect of sunlight, and removing deer damaged limbs. It is a physically and mentally active task that has aesthetic and financial rewards. It is also much different than pruning ornamental trees and shrubs, which I also love to prune. The point to pruning ornamentals (other than topiary) is to restore it to its natural shape, to encourage new growth and blooms, and to remove diseased branches or prevent disease. The point to pruning timber is to produce the largest and straightest trunk. . . .

It's lucky for me Bloom Day is the 15th...we've had high winds for the last two days which meant picture taking would have been problematic. Today, though, is looking to be calm and sunny which is a perfect beginning to the weekend. As usual there are plenty of blooms in the Central Valley to perk up the garden, helping to draw the eye away from the plants waiting to be cut back after the danger of freezing passes. This is a frustrating time in the Davis garden...

Valentine's Day 2008
Today is a classic red day like the red Asiatic lilies pictured above. It's Valentines Day and a day to remember, not a day to forget. Here at Vermont Flower Farm things are in their usual upside down winter state. I just got home from work and Gail and Alex just returned from Burlington. We could have used one of those wizard's wands you see on television cartoon shows where a little flick here and there and things fall into place. We don't have one. . . .

I spent the entire morning lazily searching out new (to me) gardening blogs. It was nice to not be in a rush and only hurriedly clicking through my favorites list.
I found some really interesting things, people and plant stuff. . . .
