Fine Gardening Magazine Educational DVDs Review

This Garden Is Illegal via This Garden Is Illegal on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

This week’s product to review was sent to me by Fine Gardening magazine. It was a set of DVDs that were presented to me by Fine Gardening as a great resource of information on very focused gardening topics. I got to take a look at Pruning and Propagation. First, because I like to present good news . .

Rainbow Orchid
Vanda Trevor RathboneBanjong
(VAN-duh)

One thing I wanted to do on Saturday was take a nice pictures of a Vanda Orchid. They are among my favorite types of Orchids. Photographing them in the past as proved to be something I am not really good at. I got a few pictures on Saturday from among the beautiful collection of Vandas that were displayed. They had an almost black one, some nice purples, a red one and a yellow one. They also had some species, which I hadn’t really seen before. . . .

Activating Yin

The Occasional Gardener via The Occasional Gardener on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

Despite all this talk of spring the weather in NYC remains fairly chilly. My trip up to Mamaroneck last week was largely spent - not in the garden. Its currently over run with workmen and machines as they work on the new extensions to the house. Even the potting shed is out of bounds - it's now become command central for the construction team and warehouse for random displaced furniture. We did manage to plant some trays of seed. Fingers Crossed. . .

The worms fend for themselves for a fortnight

Horticultural via Horticultural on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

On reflection, my decision to check on my wormery a couple of hours after returning home from a transatlantic journey of many hours, while still intensely jetlagged, furry-toothed and empty-stomached was a foolish one. Normally I feel nothing but pride for my slithery charges, but at that moment, the sight made me want to heave. I was rather anxious about leaving them to their own devices for a fortnight, so soon after the wormery had been set up. Put too much food waste inside and the worms would not be able to eat it all, so some would putrefy and...

The Day Before Spring Flower

An Iowa Garden via An Iowa Garden on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

Yesterday was improbably cold and bitter, with a thin blanket of new snow in the morning, stinging sleet driven by swirling winds in the afternoon, and a high temperature barely above freezing... not the most propitious day to take the camera out to the garden to find what's in bloom. However, this little flower, Shibateranthis pinnatifida, has been out for a week, shyly and bravely just poking through the brown leaf litter. . ..

Full Force Chorus

Dirt Under My Nails via Dirt Under My Nails on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

Meant to be posted on Friday

The little peepers are singing their little hearts out. Granted, the winds sometimes quiet them down.

I saw the surest sign of spring the other day, the grocery store had annuals out for sale. So far, I've resisted. But then, my pansies survived the winter. :)

The purple crocus popped up and are blooming. The daffodils are just starting to open. And some squirrel has wierd ideas about where crocus and daffodil bulbs need to be planted -- the crown of the hydrangea bush!

Horticultural via Horticultural on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

I've just been talking to Andy Garland on BBC Radio Kent's Sunday Gardening show, talking about how your allotment suffers when you have a baby, a propos of this post. Gill of My Tiny Plot was also interviewed - she's eight months pregnant at the moment so I hope I didn't terrify her too much! I think you should be able to listen to it if you click on the listen again link on this page. I had planned to pop down to the plot later today during naptime for a tad of trench composting and some shallot planting, but...

How Not To Start Your Spring Vacation or "Am I Dead Yet?"

Dirt Therapy via Dirt Therapy on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

I was off work Friday for Good Friday and I'm off this entire week for Spring Break. I'm hoping to get some major gardening chores accomplished and I decided that the first order of business would be to clear out the Rambling Rector rose on my pergola that I wrote about a while back. Well, after wrestling with RR all day Friday, recuperating on Saturday, and finishing up today, I can say that the deed is done but I'm telling you it was a fight to the finish. Lord, this is one vicious rose - I swear it had it in for me! I had already cut the rose back a few months ago so the major clean-up involved getting the long prickly canes off the top of the pergola. Since I couldn't stand on top of the pergola, all I could do was work from a ladder or stand beneath it and reach up with lopers. I did both and it was a long and tedious job. . . .

Winter’s Survivors Appear in the Spring Garden

They are all growing very fast. The peppers came up today. The kale and escarole have their second set of leaves starting. The onions are straightening up. I move the trays around during the day to catch the best sunlight. Also, I am working on thinning out the more dense seedlings. After seeing Gretta's nice individual plants that aren't stretching out like mine, I am trying to do better at this though its hard to trow away cute little plants.

I have almost 3 trays planted now - with 17 different varieties of vegetables.

A Different Shade Of Green

An Iowa Garden via An Iowa Garden on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

I've always loved these stanzas of Tolkien's poem:

I sit beside the fire and think
of how the world will be
when winter comes without a spring
that I shall ever see.

For still there are so many things
that I have never seen;
in every wood in every spring
there is a different green.

Planting our butterfly garden

The Cheap Vegetable Gardener via The Cheap Vegetable Gardener on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

Yesterday with the weather almost getting to 60 seemed like a good day to try sow some of our vegetable seeds outside for our butterfly garden. I tried to make things organized by grouping the Black-eyed Susan, purple coneflowers, zinnias, and nasturtiums, but my daughter decided to distribute the seeds a little more random. I am sure the butterflies won't mind and guess it should look a little closer to how nature would do it.

I have learned from my years of gardening I normally am too optimistic about when seeds can be planted outside so as a backup plan we also planted some of the same seeds indoors which are currently trying to push their way closer to the PC grow box.

I took this photo last weekend at Canada Blooms. The grass isn’t real…it was on the floor in the “Niagara Wine Tasting Garden”, which admittedly contained very few actual plants, but was pleasant nonetheless. If I squinted a little, I could almost imagine that I was looking at real grass.

Black and White Orchids

Digital Flower Pictures.com via Digital Flower Pictures.com on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

Black and White Orchids

Yesterday I attended the New York Orchid Show again. The flowers were still fresh and I saw a couple of Orchids that either I missed last time or were new. I took both of my Point and Shoot cameras (or compact cameras as I like to call them) with me to try and shoot a couple of Black and White images. I call them compact cameras since they are capable of running on full manual settings, if you want. I can never believe all the technology that is packed into these little boxes. I think that Orchids are detailed enough to give some interest to a black and white photo and once the magnificent color is stripped away you are down to the shape of the flower. . . .
