Perennial flower identification shouldn't be a chore

Gardening Tips 'n' Ideas via Gardening Tips 'n' Ideas on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

Lavatera-Mallow.jpg When confronted with millions of different plant species throughout the world, it's no surprise that flower identification can be seen as 'Mission Impossible'. Even with the advent of the web and thousands upon thousands of images now at your disposal the task is not becoming any easier. In reality, it's probably becoming harder.

Perennial flower identification can be the hardest to undertake because once they've been dropped from the fashion set they can be hard to find. People stop growing them and knowledge about such plants begins to dissipate. . . .

Daff cam 4-15-08Vacation week is perfectly timed this year or else it’s the daffs that are right on time. No matter if you think that spring is early or late this year, it’s surely happening now. And it’s Garden Bloggers Bloom Day (hosted by gracious Carol of May Dreams Gardens)! It’s all blooms all the time from now until Christmas and here’s a little taste of what’s open: First and foremost, the Daffodils. Probably 60% are open — I think all of the ‘Ice Follies’ are showing and we think, depending entirely on the weather, we should be at 98% (that’s peak!) by early next week. And the show will go on barring tempests, freezes or scorchers — then, of course all bets are off. So come when you can! You’ll also see these other things blooming today if you’re on the lookout. . .

ABC Wednesday – Magnolia

If you are here for Wordless Wednesday please scroll down to the next post. Thanks for stopping by.

With perfect timing the Magnolia flower arrived this week just in time for an ‘M’ post. This first picture is a yellow form (which you don’t see that often) called ‘Butterflies’. I actually took this picture at the local wholesale nursery because the ‘Butterflies’ I have been growing for the last 20 years has never flowered. It is in too much shade and is probably too big to move now because of its location. I still hope to see a flower on it someday. . . .

Orchid Tree Seed Pods Explode in April

danielle's garden blog via danielle's garden blog on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

Bauhinia variegata (Orchid Tree) seed pods literally explode. I was in the garage yesterday for 8 hours getting work done, and I kept hearing little exlosions come from the two trees nearby.

I'm talking "explode"!!! They didn't just fall to the ground, they have been bursting sideways, straight up, and straight down. A few of them even put a little nick in my car (which I'm not upset about cause it's cool). Some of them have burst into my garage from across the street. I'm so serious. . . .

I thought I was going to fall and kill myself, but no, I survived perching on a tall thin stump to take this photo. I think from this view you get a good sense of the plot and surroundings. You can see the meadow to the right. The surrounding plots. And you can see all of my plot. I have now finished turning the soil, and I've marked out the plot perimeter, doorway and the beds. Now I have to try to stay away from the plot for a few days to catch up on my work and the yard work at home. It won't be easy....

Here's a slide show of some photos from my plot today.

From the Harlow Carr Alpine house yesterday two photos of the Blue flowered Gentian.I loved the Kaladeiscope effect down the middle of the flower. It was nice in the morning and raining by lunchtime.I loved exploring the gardens to see what changes have been made. The colours and flowers were there, but not as obvious as a summer visit.
The curator likes to keep visitors guessing what is new.I will pick a bakers dozen (13) from yesterdays photos.
I paid more interest yesterday to the Kitchen garden with its many newly laid raised beds, and funky pergolas between some of the beds.
Enjoy this flower! The alpine house's are always full of beautiful and sometimes strange flowers. A photographing gardeners dream.

I know this sounds a bit "odd" but some people just really do need turf areas in their landscape. It doesn't appeal or even look good to have it ALL in flowers, shrubs and trees!
When planting new turf, or reseeding existing lawns, get water-saving species adapted to your area. . . .

A Gardening Accident Waiting to Happen

Doug's Garden Blog via Doug's Garden Blog on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

Here’s my take on one of the hottest gardening “solutions” being offered up to unsuspecting gardeners this season. An accident waiting to happen.

One of the biggest “solutions” being offered up by chemical gardening fans is the “environmentally-friendly” water absorbing chemicals. The premise is that you mix this material into your soil and it absorbs moisture. It then slowly releases this moisture for your plants. You have a way to fight off drought and water stress. . .

The grass is greening up quickly now, and we'll be getting out the lawn mower sooner than we want to, I'm sure.
