The bulb for this amaryllis was given to me by a student family in early December as a Christmas gift. I followed the instructions carefully, but for months it just wouldn't grow beyond the few initial spikes of leaves. I thought perhaps I had over-watered it initially, or hadn't watered it enough. Maybe it was too cold in the indoor garden room. I felt like Charlie Brown and his little Christmas tree: "I've killed it.". . .

I'm loving the weather inside the house where flowers are blooming! My 'Apple Blossom' amaryllis (Hippeastrum) that I've had for two years is finally blooming for the first time. The blooms are HUGE! The flower stalk is one of the taller ones I've had, too. . ..

I'm probably late to the party (I'm late for a lot of things, being The Queen of Procrastination, you know), but I made a discovery today that has me wondering if it's too good to be true.
Hardy amaryllis. As in Hippeastrum. Yeah, like the 'Red Lion' and 'Apple Blossom' kind. Imagine living in zone 5 and growing them in your garden year round. No lifting in the fall and storing in the basement. Unless you really want to, and you can do that, too. . . .

Hippeastrum 'Lemon Lime' The first Amaryllis bloom of the season opened for me right before Christmas. It was the 'Lemon Lime' bulb I'd bought in November. Shortly after potting it up, it put out two flower stalks. Yesterday I cut the first one off because it was done blooming, just as the second one is preparing to open. 'Lemon Lime' is considered a dwarf amaryllis, typically growing to a height of 16-20 inches. Bloom size measures approximately 4-5 inches across. . . .

Christmas was cool. All the children showed up for Christmas Eve din-din. OK, so it was under the threat of penalty of death, but that's besides the point. After Church service with the grandparents, I stuffed their faces and plied them with wine, then watched as they all sprawled across the couch groaning with swollen bellies. It doesn't matter that they couldn't move for 3 hours cause I was happy, and when the Mom is happy, all is well, you know!. . .

Here is my first ever amaryllis...I had to rescue it from a bin in the garden department at the hardware store since it had started to grow. The first bloom appeared Dec 21 and when we returned today from an overnight stay at my daughter's house I found four blooms...and more to come on the other stalk! Then my task will be to see if I can have it survive for next year. And here is the present I bought for my son-in-law...except I was so excited about it I had to get one for me too...so now that I'm home I need to go set up my box...we did his yesterday at their house.

This past week has been a blur of events at work that left me in Burlington at the close of the work day yesterday afternoon. Until I dropped off a passenger in Montpelier on the way home and he wished me a good weekend, I wasn't even tuned in to the fact the week was over. Some weeks are like this, and that's why I enjoy gardening a whole lot more. . . .

Hey all, as I mentioned a little bit ago on the radio, you can buy huge amaryllis bulbs in time to bloom for Christmas and be a do-gooder at the same time. The proceeds from the sale of the bulbs benefit the Idaho Horticulture Society. Call my gal pal Jan Haneke at 941-1754 to get some of these glorious jumbo bulbs. $15 for the single petaled variety, $20 for the frilly ones.
And check out www.colorblends.com for bulb kits. Minimum order is $50 but shipping is reasonable. On a $60 order, the shipping was just $10.

If you read this blog last winter you may remember my experiments with pollinating my Amaryllis and the subsequent Amaryllis seed pods and know that I have one or two of these flowering indoor bulbs around. At the beginning of October I moved my potted Amaryllids onto the porch so they wouldn't get sun or water and make them lose their leaves. . . .

Since Thanksgiving, we have had an Amaryllis (Hippeastrum sp.) in bloom every single day. I don't time it like that on purpose, it just happens like this. Of course, it helps that I have many, many Amaryllis bulbs, but still. If I would try and plan for them to do this, it wouldn't happen, you know. It's one of the Murphy's Laws of Gardening. . .

This Amaryllis 'Apple Blossom' is currently in bloom in my indoor garden. It's another one of my Amaryllis bulbs that I purchased from a big box store after the Holidays about a year ago. I believe I used the pollen from this bulb in a crossing with an Amaryllis 'Red Lion' last year but I didn't label the seed pods. The metallic sheen on the flowers of this bulb really make it one of my favorite Amaryllis bulbs.

Here's my latest Amaryllis to bloom unfortunately I haven't been able to find a name for it yet. It's a smaller bloom than the others that I have. The scape was about 18 inches tall and the flowers were six inches wide. I tried to cross it with my Amaryllis Minerva but only one pod formed with the pollen that the Minerva donated. I got better results on my Minerva, the pollen from this plant formed two seed pods. . . .

Here is my Amaryllis Hermitage in all of its glory. The first main flower stalk ended up shorter than last year much to my delight. No worry of it flopping over. There is another flower stalk growing that could very well end up taller than the first. Last year the two stalks bloomed at the same time, quite spectacular. I am happy with the staggered blooms though, as it is prolonging the color. . .

I received this amaryllis as a Christmas gift from a sweet friend. I think I planted it a week or so before Christmas. I have patiently watered (and talked to) it ever since. I was rewarded with the above bloom last week. I had to giggle when I read Mr. Brownthumb's blog the same topic. It stayed vibrant and beautiful for a week or so and now it's withering. But man, do those leaves look great! I guess I'll plant this puppy in my garden in a few weeks (when the threat of a freeze is over). I have learned from this experience that patience in not MY virtue.

This past Christmas Target carried these bulbs from Smith And Hawken that ranged in price from $6.99 to $29.99. At the local Target there were two bulbs for sale for $29.99 they were a Minerva and Mont Blanc. They were exceptionally large bulbs about the size of the JUMBO

As you can see, the Amaryllis turned out to be a beautiful soft pink, with a touch of white. Unfortunately, last Saturday, 2 of the buds were broken off ...and now there's only one left. At first I thought Jasmine had done the dreadful deed, and was feeling more than a wee bit angry with her. She sometimes plays with the plants while she's watching the birds...and she gets a bit wild and crazy. I'm surprised I have any plants left at all! But then Ross realized that he had probably done it....and she was saved from my wrath. . .

A few days before Christmas I was walking through the greenhouse of a Home Depot and I came across this new way of growing an Amaryllis. At first I couldn't believe what I was seeing it looked like the brain child of a sadistic Amaryllis grower. It reminded me of this one time when I was working in a bonsai nursery and these two older ladies walked in and walked out in a huff but not before I got an earful of how "mean" we were for growing trees in such little pots. When I saw this Amaryllis I had almost the same reaction as those two ladies some years back except I didn't yell at anyone and threaten to call the Arbor Day Foundation. . . .
