Have any of you bloggers out there ever sat down and really gone through your traffic logs? I'm not talking about your main traffic sources, I'm more interested in the stuff way at the bottom of the stats. I've found some interesting search phrases in my logs that make me wonder what kind of loony people are using Google. . . .

So lately I've been feeling like my horizon has disappeared. And I'm somewhere in the horse latitudes. I feel adrift with no sense of if I'm moving forward or backward or standing completely still. Not necessarily panicked or anything, but a definite sense of "I'm not where I want to be at this point in my life". So I haven't been blogging. Just lots of taking stock and thinking. . . .

Summer is winding down - although I don't think it really reached its full potential this year. We had more rain than we have ever had for many, many years. This is the first time in ages that we haven't had that brown lawn look in August. . . .

Over at Clay and Limestone Gail was wondering how blogs got their names. Other bloggers have participated so I thought I would add my two cents worth. For me it was very easy. I've always used the name Crafty Gardener at message boards and my personal website craftygardener.caI love crafting and I love gardening ... hence my name was created. When I first set up my blog I went through several names trying to find one that fit. I finally settled on The Gardener Side and then The Crafty Side so that I could blog about both sides of my name. . ..

This is my 500th post for this blog. A milestone of some sorts I guess.
Last weekend we went back to the wholesale nursery because they were having a dollar sale. Of course the dollar plants were not the ones we wanted so we ended up spending a lot of green again. As I went to pay for our largess, I saw a hot pepper poster which did not include the world's hottest pepper the Bhut Jolokia. I mentioned to the owner that I was trying to grow some from seed. He was skeptical and asked me where I obtained my seeds. . . .

I recently submitted Playing in the Dirt to a directory of eco-friendly blogs called “Best Green Blogs“. I’m proud to report that not only was this site included in the directory, but it was given the designation of Editor’s Choice!
Timothy Latz, Editor of Best Green Blogs describes Playing in the Dirt:
Playing In The Dirt is one of the original gardening blogs publishing since 2004. If you have a green thumb and are interested in networking with other gardeners who blog, then PITD is a wonderful resource for that.
Thanks, Timothy! I’m happy to be part of such an excellent resource for green-focused content on the web.

I'm just waiting for things to get back into a routine here after a three-day weekend spent geocaching in beautiful urban Kendallville, Indiana, followed by two days of working, one night spent at Jenna and Joe's, and seven-mile and four-mile runs on Sunday and Tuesday. I'm kinda tired.
But once again, there's much to blog about - new things since the last time I got behind and posted a list. I've got some nice photos taken at Earth Girl's haunt, the Gene Stratton-Porter Historical Site. We visited there on Saturday and enjoyed the beautiful weather for a stroll through the wildflower gardens and a tour of the cabin. . . .

Let’s set the stage a bit.
In the world of the Internet, links have been seen as currency. A link from a site with a higher Google PageRank than yours is a good thing. So if your site is ranked as a 2 and you get an inbound link from a 5, life is good. Your ranking and authority with Google goes up and over time, you’ll get more traffic. So incoming links have some value. . . .

Last several months forced me to compromise on many things as there was too much going on at the same time in life. I poked my head at once in several things at once which included professional up gradation and increased responsibilities on my work front. And thus, I had to be away from two of my greatest stress busters – gardening and blogging.
It was especially the latter which I rued missing most. Over the time giving and receiving comments, blog hopping, writing posts, photography from a bloggers’ perspective etc have become an essential way of life. . . .

Well, I'm back. I was going to take the rest of the summer off from blogging and focus on my career but my career is just too boring. The plan was to read a lot of programming books (I build corporate intranet sites for a living, you know IT stuff), take some training courses and update my certifications and get back into consulting but I that would have been a miserable summer.
I'm still going to update my skillset and look for consulting spots but I'm going to blog about compost while I'm doing it.

Well not 100% sure there is not a younger garden blogger out there but at the ripe age of 6 pretty sure Megan is in close competition. You can check out "Megan's Garden" at http://www.megansgarden.com. Now I must warn you that this blog is written by a 6 year old that does not use a spell checker so if you may need to read phonetically which can be a fun challenge to see garden blogging from a child's perspective.

Dreams and Bones was three years old on Sunday. I like to acknowledge these things because I believe there is way too little celebration in the world.
I think back on the lifespan of garden blogs. I miss Judith and Liz. Their blogs were beacons for me. But each month there are new bloggers out there with fresh insights and energy. My own commitment to the practice has flagged this past year. I am afraid it is what it is.
But for what it is worth, I am back in the saddle and ready to engage another full season. For those of you who have been "lurking," please leave a comment so I can find my way to YOU.
