Time to check on the sauerkraut!

Welcome to My Garden via Welcome to My Garden on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

It has been 4 weeks now since I started the sauerkraut fermenting. I figured it was time to dump it in a bigger container and do a taste test. I tasted it and it was wonderful! No amount of persuading would convince Andy to taste it. Dan reluctantly tasted it and pronounced it also wonderful - but warned me if he gets sick, I'll never hear the end of it. He also asked me what was the difference between fermenting and rotting. Caught off guard all I could come up with was that fermenting was to produce something edible and rotting was for compost......

Picking cabbage

Welcome to My Garden via Welcome to My Garden on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

My husband snapped this picture of me this evening right after I picked this red cabbage. It is a nice looking cabbage. I think I'll make some cole slaw tomorrow.

Cabbage Pride

Gardening for Health via Gardening for Health on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

To the average gardener, the picture to the left may not mean anything important. Yet to us, it represents cabbage pride. We have unsuccessfully tried two years in a row to raise cabbage. But before the cabbage can really start to grow, some little dirty cabbage worm or other pest would come and consume the plant almost overnight.
This year we decided to try some other tactics, including starting the plant a couple of weeks earlier than we have in the past. Finally, we have experienced the joy of having fresh cabbage from our own garden! The first cabbage we cooked, we savored every bite. It was delicious! When you plant something, cultivate it, and watch it grow, to enjoy it as part of a meal is like icing on the cake. It makes you have much more appreciation for food, than when you just run to the local grocery store and pick something up; a joy and satisfaction that brings a smile to my face.

Why Captain Cook always sailed with cabbage on board

Acorns via Acorns on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

During Captain Cook's first voyage in 1768, a mighty storm came up, injuring many sailors. To save the men from gangrene, the ship's doctor made a poultice of mashed cabbage and applied it to their wounds...

Learn more about Cook's cabbage, why cabbage was named Plant of the Year by the National Gardening Association and how it inspired one of the most notorious weapons of World War I...

Realization Of The Day:
Nero di Toscana Cabbage is known around the world by several other names, including Black Palm Cabbage, Cavalo Nero, Black Kale, Tuscan Kale, Lacinato Kale, and Dinosaur Kale. But it really should be universally called Cat Cabbage because I swear this stuff has nine lives. . .

This Cabbage Wants to be Pickled -- Part One

Calendula & Concrete via Calendula & Concrete on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

With World Cup going on, and another enthusiastic win for the Germans on Saturday, I've been having cravings for German food lately. Brats with mustard, schnitzel, spaetzle, potato pancakes... and Rotkohl (red cabbage). I had three red cabbage seedlings that I planted in the garden last fall. The plants overwintered and two of them bolted earlier this spring; the third one developed a nice,

Growing Cabbages

Veggie Gardening Tips via Veggie Gardening Tips on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

I received a recent request from a gardener asking for tips on growing cabbages in the home garden. Cabbage is a cole crop that’s closely related to kale, collards, broccoli, and Brussels Sprouts.

Instead of forming loose leaves along its stem the cabbage leaves wrap around and fold over each other to form a dense head of layered leaves. Cabbages are heavy feeders and appreciate a fertile soil enriched with good compost or a balanced organic fertilizer. . .

Great growing tips! -OR
