Just wanted to give you some links for today's column:
Old House Gardens Colorblends John Scheepers
I hated leaving out Brent & Becky's Bulbs, too. I've never met Becky, but Brent's been to Rochester before and he's a really sweet, wonderful guy in addition to being a bulb genius. Check out their site.

For years I had enjoyed and sometimes ordered from two garden companies that produced outstanding catalogs. If a garden catalog is carefully put together it can double as a compendium of useful gardening information. They are usually condensed versions of what amounts to garden dictionary definitions of plant requirements and descriptions. I received two of the catalog stalwarts this winter and the one lived up to expectations and exceeded, while the other has sadly gone the way of the carnival hawking aka most garden catalog's hype. That is my opinion, anyway. . . .

Ruth, fellow Minnesotan of Nature Knitter fame, gently asked if I would provide links to the seed catalog companies I listed in my last post. As a blogger, I was terribly negligent in not providing the links in the first place, but when I wrote the post I was feeling lazy and didn't want to look up all the sites. Now, it's fixed - all the links are provided in the post. . . .

Okay, enough moping about the weather. Yes, it's now 3:00 pm and the thermometer is stuck at -6F, but at least the wind has died down, so the windchill is up to -28F. In any case, I'm snuggled at home where the furnace is working like a charm.
Besides, look what I'm doing today - going through seed catalogs! Here's my stack. I've received a total of 26 catalogs. Of those, I've whittled down the vegetable catalogs down to eight that I'll actually look through: Pinetree Garden Seeds, Seed Saver's Exchange, Fedco Seeds, Johnny's Selected Seeds, Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds, Seeds of Change, John Scheepers Kitchen Garden Seeds and Territorial Seed Company. I may also have to go to Tomato Bob's website to see what they have. I ordered - and received - a print catalog from them in 2007, but nothing this year. . . .

I found this in the mailbox the other day. This is from a shop that sells stuff for the garden and pets, so that's a double whammy as far as I'm concerned. I started leafing through it, to see what they got on offer as they sometimes have very good deals on plants and other stuff for the garden. And they got some nice stuff for pets too which is of the utmost interest to the Bliss team. . . .

Don't the waiters and waitresses shout, "Ordering!" when they turn in their orders? I guess since many restaurants use computer ordering, this shout-out must be getting obsolete. But I feel like shouting it, cuz I have gone through all the catalogs, and have come up with my modest list of seeds for the upcoming season. Nicotiana--maybe my most favorite annual--alata, the white "Fragrant Cloud"--which smells heavenly, and "Favorite Mix" for color; the real california poppy, along with shirley poppy, and of course, 'Cedric Morris' from T & M; datura 'Belle Blanche,' and a tall white snapdragon, for more white; of course, verbena bonariensis, which I'm gonna plant dozens of; moonflower; browallia, which is impossible for me to find in commerce; and the new one for this year [last year it was Laurentia] is lopezia cordata 'Pretty Rose'...Trying once more with a Patty's Plum poppy, too. I have so little room to start seeds, this will take up every square inch. No veggies--I'd just be feeding my bunnies. If I can get it together to fax these in, I'll really feel accomplished! These are the last days when I'm doing Absolutely No Gardening. I'd best enjoy them!

All month we have been seeing posts about the stacks of seed catalogs that appear in gardeners' mailboxes. I love reading about people's excitement for seed catalogs. Just for the record, here is my new 2008 seed catalog collection:
I'm curious, what effect do all of these catalogs have on gardeners decisions as to where to buy their seeds? So what better way to find out then to ask some gardeners? . . .

Seed catalog shopping is a dangerous business. Even for us. Even with a greenhouse for early spring sowing and 5 good sized gardens to fill we have to be careful to not buy more than we can realistically find space for. And like most home gardeners who are not independently fabulously wealthy, we have a tight budget. So as Gail and I go through the catalogs we also mentally scan the gardens and every time we find something - or are lured by artful photography with a blaze across that shouts NEW! - that we weren’t looking for, we have to figure out exactly where it will fit in the garden. (And that will help justify creating room for the seedlings in the already packed to the gills greenhouse.)

It amazes me how much junk mail I get these days. Going to the mailbox no longer is the anticipation-filled happy trip it used to be. Now, as I walk the 10 steps to my postal receptacle, I'm usually filled with dread, as a big job sifting through the junk invariably follows. . . .

Today's email inbox brought over 300 emails (as usual!) among them was one from Gardener's Supply featuring these colorful clogs in a garden setting. I adore this image. Ever since I got their new cataloga few weeks ago, I've been dreaming of ordering a pair in every color they have and making my own such garden display. Sure I already own 5 pairs of Crocs and various other garden clogs, but I don't have any pink or brown or yellow -- yet!. . .

Can seed catalogs have personalities? Do you buy from a particular company because you like the catalog?
I started this post over a week ago. I was going to write a comparison of a few seed catalogs, but it turned into a cranky rant against one company's glossy catalog. I tried to rewrite the post in milder language, but found I was still cranky. It's just that this catalog was an old reliable - probably the one thing that got me interested in gardening more than any other - and now I don't like it much any more. I feel it doesn't respect me. That it thinks all it has to do is show me some pretty pictures and I'll go chasing them, credit card in hand. Well, it's wrong. I've found other seed catalogs I like much better. They inform me. They entertain me. They like gardening and I think they like me.
The one with no pictures is one of my favorites.

was the catalog photo…
There is something about browsing seed and plant catalogs that doesn’t feel like work to me and without Gail here to say “it’s ok!†and “we need to get the orders in by the end of the month!†I’m inclined to put it off until the “real†work is done. (That only gets more complicated when I enjoy the “real†work so much that I put it off too.) It’s like waiting to have dessert until after dinner. Eat dessert first; browse catalogs now! Or first thing when Gail is back. For me it’s less productive to shop alone and a lot less enjoyable. . . .

2008 it almost here, I wonder if I will be able to stay awake to see the new year in..........doubtful :). As seed catalogs arrive earlier and earlier each year I stack them up until after the first of year, three more arrived today, but after tomorrow I can start browsing, YEAH! Spring is just around the corner, right???? Select Seeds arrived today, it is my favorite catalog so I may have to look at that one tomorrow. We have a very quiet day planned, I am going to watch the Rose Parade start to finish on HGTV as they air it without commercials. Have a happy and safe new year, I feel 2008 is going to bring some changes in my life.

It used to be that the new vegetable seed catalogs would start to show up in my mailbox sometime after New Years. Well times have changed and guess what arrived in my mailbox right around Thanksgiving? Yep, the first new vegetable seed catalog of the year.
Not that I’m complaining… I’ll confess to actually reading through a vegetable seed catalog as if it was a favorite magazine subscription. What else is a frustrated gardener to do during the cold sometimes snowy days of a long northern winter?. . .

Warning: This is not a feel-good blog post. Not unless you've had the same experience I have and you're in the "misery loves company" camp. If so, read on. If not, my apologies.
For a couple of weeks now, I've been trying to complete an order with Wayside Gardens, and today I came to the conclusion that they would rather not have me as a customer. I don't think I've ever purchased anything from them before, mainly due to their high prices on most things I'm interested in, but they were having a sale, so I thought I'd go ahead. And the Very Special Thing that led me to make this attempt was Paris polyphylla.

Like many of you, I get way, way, way too many catalogs and industry mags, the vast majority of which I didn’t request and will never use.
