Murdock in the Catnip - artwork (c)2008 Val Webb
You don’t have to be a cat owner to justify growing catnip in your garden. It’s a beautiful herb with downy, heart-shaped leaves and the square stem that signifies mint … and it’s very useful stuff. Years ago, when I lived in the mountains, I met older [...]

My name is Emily and this is my garden. It is on the end of one row in the big garden, next to the fennel and parsley. I don't like them, so I'm growing my own garden. What do I grow? Catnip of course!. . .

I've noticed little catnip leaves working their way out of the ground. I'm not the only one that noticed... evidence says a certain gray shedding furball has also noticed. In order to give the catnip a fair chance of growing large enough to handle the kitty visitors, it's been cloaked. . .

Way Down Yonder in the Catnip Patch
The cats were in the yard when I came home from work yesterday. My camera batteries ran out of juice during the photo shoot, and when I changed them, it turned out that the ones in the pouch didn't have any energy either. I missed what would have been a great picture of Her Ladyship and Missy wrestling near the catnip patch. Oh, well. I guess it’s time for a set of new rechargeables.
Anyway, here are some of the pictures I got. First, Her Ladyship near the catnip patch:

Catnip is a member of the Mint family, Catnip is an aromatic, strong smelling herb. It has clusters of white or purplish-blue flowers atop toothy, heart shaped leaves with a light gray colored fuzz on the leaf. There is also an uncommon yellow variety. The leaves have a lemon-mint flavor and scent. It is fun to grow for your cats, and for tea for you. . .

I’m sure my neighbor was relieved to see the rose bed go from muddy pit to tilled paisley last Sunday. It took me 5 hours to level the bed (I had a pile of dirt from my initial attempt at double-digging), till the hardpan, work in peat moss, dig three 18” x 18” holes, amend the fill, and plant the three
Julia Child roses. Later that day, I came home from Anne’s house with iris divisions and added those too. This weekend, I buried 10 lily bulbs and plugged in a few sweet alyssum seedlings. All that’s missing is the catmint. . .
