Earth Day 2008

The Compost Bin via The Compost Bin on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

20 yards of mulch
This year, to celebrate Earth Day, I ordered a big pile of Earth and had it dumped in my driveway.

What...? Isn't that what your supposed to do?

Several years ago my sweet brother made this double stalled compost bin for me. Pretty handy because its easy to turn the compost by just forking it from one side to the other. It is all screwed together; screws being the only way to go. The bins are 3' x 4' x 3' deep. The spacers on the slidy-slat front are wine corks. . . .

Composting is not the chore it used to be

Gardening and Yardening via Gardening and Yardening on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

Using compost in caring for landscape plants is still touted in magazines and newspapers. What bothers me is the assumption in many of these articles that lots and lots of folks still make their own compost. In fact, the opposite is true -- few people make their own compost anymore, and few use compost in their yards.

Backyard composting came into its own in the 1970s along with recycling, exploding fuel prices and communes. Back then, I was sucked into the wonderfulness of making your own compost. Being obsessive in most activities, I made lots and lots of compost each year -- enough to more than fill a large pickup truck. . . .

I am not one of those people who jumps on a chair at the merest hint of a mouse, but my skin crawled at the sight of a rat crawling through my kitchen and garden waste. I left the rat to it, hoping that it would fall prey to the regular baiting programme in place on my allotment site to deal with the pest problem. But this week I was reminded of the issue of rats on...

All the news that's fit to compost

Horticultural via Horticultural on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

If you want to have your very own composting toilet, perhaps in the garden to save those "tramping in the house with muddy boots" moments, you can even build your own, as volunteers at Oxford Community Garden did. There's also more links and resources at Scietch blog. Let's just say this is - unfortunately - way, way down my to-do list, languishing with things I'd love to do in my dreams, like building my own log cabin in the wilderness, that...

The Other Compost Bin

Compost Bin via Compost Bin on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

Compost Bin PictureNow this compost bin may look like almost identical to the other one but it's contents are very different. The big bin is 100% leaves. No grass, no coffee grinds, no plants, no boat, no life, no motorcar. Now this smaller compost bin is a completely different animal. It starts with a generous base layer of leaves, then the core is almost completely vegetable garden waste, and I top it off with more leaves. Sort of a end of the season garden sandwich. And that's a great way to make compost. . . .

My garden maintenance area is finally well under way. After years of moving temporary compost bins around as each section of the garden was landscaped they have now taken up their final residence behind the kid's cubby house.

This is one of only two sections left that still need to landscaped. This area will eventually cater for our vegetables and aquaponics setup but will most likely be the last area completed. We're still researching the whole backyard aquaponics deal and are noticing many others are starting to take it up - so we can learn from their successes and mistakes. . . .

A full day of leaf shredding has the 3-bin compost system full to overflowing. What a great feeling to have that done. Plenty more leaves will be falling, have fallen, since yesterday, but the rest will just have stay where they land, or maybe they'll blow across the street into the neighbor's yard. I don't think I've ever really thought about whether there are good or bad times of the year to add compost to the garden - until this past weekend. I have always focused on how great fresh "home-made" compost is for an organic garden and just added it whenever it became available.

This weekend I was delighted to find that I had a lot of compost ready so I began top dressing some of my garden beds. Much of my pile behind the garden had fully broken down and the batch of organic matter that I put in my new compost tumbler at the beginning of the season was completely ready!. . .
