Most people know that daffodil bulbs will "naturalize," meaning that they will multiply in the ground, each bulb adding one or two more each year. But there is another way to increase your bulbs--a process called scaling in which you slice the bulb into sections that will then form bulblets. Bulbs produced through scaling will take two or three years to flower, but you can potentially produce more bulbs through scaling than through naturalizing.

Its Sunny out and I am going back to Harlow Carr today. The photo is of a narcissus, one of the ghostly gardeners bulbs. I love the sunlight on the flower petals.I was trying to capture the sweet glow of the flower. When the sun shines these Daffodils and Narcissus light up the Spring garden..

When we first bought our house this forsythia bush was so large that you had to push your way past it. It was so large and out of control it was created an obstacle. Our roommate in a fit of rage severely pruned it back. Despite being blown to bits it has grown back every year and has continued to grow larger and larger needing frequent pruning. In a few weeks these yellow flowers will be replaced by bright green leaves.

The Dwarf Daffodil Minnow in bloom in the windowbox, with the sky reflecting off the kitchen windowsill. Its like a painted backdrop from a really old movie! I love the delicate petals and central yellow cup. I was doing some research today into Florigraphy and the traditional meaning of Daffodils was "You bring me sunshine". . . .

It reached 60 degrees here for the first time since October 30th! The first daffodil bloomed today, although they see a bit stunted in height this year. The stores got their first shipments of pansies in as well. I had to pot up some pansies right away:) I also talked my husband into expanding our veggie garden. It was so small before it would always get overgrown. I cheated and bought some spinach plants from Home Depot. I usually grow them from seed, but it is so nice to see something green coming up in the garden.

 My First Daffodil
Well I have been waiting a couple of months for this one. Finally, yesterday, one of the Daffodils at work bloomed. Later in the day I found a couple of more blooming but this is the first one that I saw. It is a Dwarf Daffodil, only about 3-4 inches tall. I had to lie down on the adjacent granite walk to get this picture. There are several hundred Dwarf Daffodils in the garden, probably about 25 different cultivars. I love them all and think their smaller stature makes them interesting. I plan on doing a lot of Daffodil and Narcissus photography this spring and this was just a teaser. I got the picture below from a group of King Alfred Daffs that are just starting to bloom. . . .

In walking through the garden today, I was very pleasantly surprised to find that several of the bulb-borne flowers have bloomed. The crocus are to be expected around this time of year, but the daffy daffodils are in full bloom and the first of the hyacinths has also bloomed! It's a sure sign that Spring has arrived. The lawn is going to need a good reseeding as there are quite a few bare patches after the winter. I'll probably need to dig a bit and put down topsoil first as the good old Jersey red clay is showing through. A few weeks ago, we had a nice warm day and I was able to clean-up and prune the roses before they broke bud. They've since broken bud as expected (given our generally mild and rainy winter) and the tiny leaves are already emerging. Hopefully, we will once again have a bumper crop of roses this year! Meanwhile, here's one of the first flowers of the year to whet your appetite!

I'd forgotten that I've been adding a few varieties of daffodils over the last three years. The little tete-a-tete daffs have already bloomed out, but most of the rest are in bloom now and there are enough to enjoy outside as well as enough to cut for inside. Still to bloom are the pink daffs I planted last year. I can't wait to see how they turn out!

 Pheasant’s Eye Narcissus
I am posting this as a sign of hope for this spring. It was taken April 24th, 2004 with my 4MP Nikon 4300. This is one of my favorite Daffodils and in the scope of the Estate’s Daffodil collection blooms fairly late. I am going to try and shoot a few more daffodil pictures this spring as I noticed I don't have that many in the library. Each spring there are about 10,000 Daffs at work. . . .

I just posted a brand new video about Daffodil classes right here. This video explains the different flower forms and shows you pictures of each form. So if you ever wanted to know what kind of daffodil you were looking at, (so you could find it to plant yourself of course) here’s the starting point.

We had plenty of garlic left over from this summer's crop, so I didn't have to buy any new seed garlic this year. I selected three of our largest bulbs and planted the individual cloves about four inches deep in the cool earth of our newly made garden bed. It was enough for three short rows, all lined up next to our still-ailing grapevine. . . .

Daffodils are among the most reliable bloomers in the spring bulb garden. They're protected from squirels, deer and other animals because they contain a bitter-tasting chemical that repels them. And unlike most tulips, daffodils are perennial, returning for many, many years of color. . . .

I planted a half of a bag of daffodils this year (I shared them with my parents). About 50 bulbs of "The Works" from White Flower Farm. It's a lot easier for me to buy a mix of bulbs than to pick my favorite daffodil. Here's what's blooming this week. (I'm surprised to have no King Alfred daffodils. Maybe I gave my parents all of the big bulbs.)

Jetfire I believe that Jetfire is the Narcissus that attracts the most attention in my garden. It is shorter and earlier than King Alfred. While many other Narcissus nod downwards, even though this one does, its recurved petals mean that it shows up really well.

Awhile back, I mentioned how I was disappointed in the 'Replete' daffodil I'd gotten a couple of years ago. I didn't like it last year, and I don't like it this year. It is supposed to be pink in the center and it's pale peachy orange. It would never occur to me to call it pink. Check out the picture, description, and most importantly the disclaimer here.
It's a double that might be called ruffly, but I call it messy. It's like it's having a bad hair day every day of its life. The picture posted here is mine and it's an extremely flattering one. It certainly doesn't look like the pictures you'll find on sellers' websites. (That subject is a rant best saved for another day.). . .

 Narcissus 'Barrett Browning' (nar-SIS-us)
This is a nice classic type of Daffodil. The Daffodils seem fine after that crazy winter we had, it seems to be one of their finer years. The tips of the foliage got singed by the cold but on most types this really doesn’t take away from the flowers. ‘Barrett Browning’ is just one of the hundreds of types of Daffs blooming right now at work. It classified as division 3, which are small-cupped daffodils of garden origin. See more about the classifications of Daffodils on this previous post . . . .

Where's the yellow?
Are my daffodils taking the year off? Was it the crazy weather this winter with 70 degree days in January and then several harsh ice storms in February? Or do my bulbs just need to be dug up and divided?
I guess I'll dig up a few and see what's going on down there. It's hard to believe that out of the 400 bulbs that I planted 3 years ago, that not one flowered. The crocus came up a little late but they were fine.
Or maybe this is my yard's way of telling me that I need more bulbs.
