My concern has never been to create a garden that's safe for pets but one that's safe from pets. Sure, I've discussed the threat of poison plants and how they can be fatally harmful for our l'il balls of fluff and it's good to be mindful of the dangers they present to our dogs and cats, but what about the damage they can do to the garden. . .

We're doggie sitting a friends coco-poo. I'm not sure that's how to spell it, but I'm sure you get the idea! This is a VERY sweet dog. Well behaved, quiet and a wonderful lap warmer! She needs to be walked frequently and I'm more than happy to oblige her. It gets me onto my garden path where I dead-head the daylillies and do light pruning a few times a day. . . .

Finally! The promised photo of Phoebe in her pool! yeahhhh! Big frickin' deal, eh? she didn't really wantto be in there this morning. Perhaps that was due to the fact that the air was quite comfortable and there was no need to stand in water. Interesting, the pose she chose when I told her to "stay".
Then this nasty looking but interesting fungi appeared when I contemplated moving a plant out of an old copper or brass container. . ..

As you can see Lucy is wonderful, Sofia is there in the background looking for the squirrels. We found out that Lucy has a hernia that will need surgery to fix but she is too young right now. After I left the vet I was so upset and crying because she said if it got blocked up it could kill Lucy. That over a week ago and Lucy is fine and rambunctious as ever! The other dogs have warmed up to her and they get along very well.
All of the lilies in the front yard have begun to bloom and some have bloomed and died I have just been too busy to post pictures. . ..

We bought our son a gorgeous Labrador Retriever for Christmas! He is now almost 13 weeks old (current photo to come) and he is chewing on every plant in the backyard!!! He completely severed the clematis and has gnawned down the honeysuckle to such an extent that I doubt it will recover. He pulled down all the beautiful ivy creeping up our 6foot privacy fence...the only plants he hasn't bothered are the roses for obvious reasons. . . .

With winter's presence there is not much to blog about in the department of gardens. Yesterday I transplanted my sad little lemon button fern into a bigger pot and I also cleaned up some of it's dead fronds. My winter has been consumed with being sick, getting better, getting sick again, getting rash from medicine, school, and homework. Here are a few pictures  of our dogs enjoying the winter...

Skippy's getting his long winter coat now. Good timing.
That's the last of my garden parsley in front of him. The kale is to his left - and is just about ready for a good bowl of Portuguese kale soup. Yummy. That's about all thats still edible in my garden now. This past week I harvested the beets and escarole. The frozen peas are just above Skippy's head. They bloomed, but didn't produce any peas before the temperature fell. The chard and broccoli also froze before producing a harvest. I'll keep this timing in mind for next years plantings.

Skippy likes to nap out by the garden - as long as its before the sun gets too hot. Those are my happy eggplants in the foreground. They are growing well this year. Though I have many furry purple flowers, I do not have any fruit set yet.

If I don't give him enough attention, or if he THINKS that he isn't getting enough attention, Toby will go into a routine of tricks to get my attention and get the camera on him. He's such a ham!

It suddenly dawned on me that I haven't posted for a week. It's not because there isn't anything going on in the garden - there most definitely is - but because Spouse and I have a new addition to the family: Brix, our adopted 6-month old puppy. We got him from Underdog Rescue. He's a cutie, but not fully housebroken. We are spending what seems like every waking hour crate training him, taking him outside for potty breaks, or taking him for long walks to release some of that puppy energy. . .

That's what is often said at my paying job about what it takes to work there. And indeed, I do find myself surrounded by some very interesting peers. The most colourful of them manage to make us laugh every day. And in a job -- or a world -- where there is so much sadness, misery and suffering, so much that it downright frightening, laughter is often a blessed relief. . . .

I finally got the time, on a gorgeous fall New England day, to clean up the island flower bed. Cut down the dead fronds of iris, daylilies, rudbeckias, anemone, on and on. All the leaves are down from the trees, making things look bare for another season. I'm not as sad about the end of the growing season--that's good, isn't it? I've been too preoccupied with the new puppy [it can make a middle aged person mighty tired!] to even keep track of the natural cycle this year. I'm hoping that by the time the muscari and daffodils are popping up, that the doggie will be calmer, and better trained!! Goal: that he not eat my nicotiana seedlings in February. Wish me luck!

No matter how much w
e know about the habits of our animals, I believe the gardening lives of our dogs will always be a world that is secret to us.
Every time I see some strange phenomena in the garden - a plant I’ve never seen before, a rock placed in an interesting spot beside the pond, a diminutive path through the alders - perhaps just tall enough for a wee elf – I take pause. No harm done, just odd goings on. Are there ‘little people’ in the garden? Well yes, there are; in fact I make a habit of feeding them. They have fur, paws and noses that follow everywhere. And, in reality, they’re not all that small. . . .

The Fluffy Connection
Have you noticed how pets seem to "go with" gardens? Especially cats.
When you see a garden, you're likely to see a cat or something, prancing through the paths, being highly decorative and making everything look cozy and homey.
Kudes to 'em, says I
For the record, my cats catch LOTS of shrews and mice. Rarely a bird or anything like that, just lots and lots of shrews and

Oh, it was a long weekend. If you've been following my challenges with my dog Lily (as I'm sure you have, with breathless anticipation ) you know that I have tried a few different tactics to keep her out of my garden beds, from trying to fence off and stake my veggie garden to just trying to fill areas with stuff. I can tell you that both of those methods failed miserably. She eventually got into the veggie garden, and so I've given up on my fall harvest, and I've found that no matter how much crap I cram into an area to keep her out, Lily will get in. . . .

A while ago I wrote about how I'm spending a lot of time erecting blockades to keep my new dog out of my gardens. Three and a half weeks ago, Lily came to live with us, and I just loved her to death. Well, let's just say, the honeymoon is over between Lily and I. Even knowing how much I love my garden, I always assumed that I'd be just fine with the damage that comes with having a dog. Now I know that, though it may be shallow and maybe even mean, I'm kind of wishing I could just have my yard back the way it was---pre-Lily. Don't get me wrong--I'm not a terrible person who hates my dog. I love the pain in the ass. She gets walked and bathed and played with and fed treats more than most dogs I know. But if she digs one more hole in my flower beds.....GRRRRR

Realization Of The Day:
There's a reason bookies don't take bets on gardeners. I could probably get better odds at the blackjack tables in Vegas.
This is what I woke up to this morning after stumbling, bleary-eyed and half asleep, out the back door in search of the reason for the intermittent, high-pitched yapping of
