I have a healthy gardenia in a pot. The plant is well over a year old and has yet to bear flowers. Any ideas as to why? (answer). From The Old Farmer's Almanac.

The entry way to my home in the spring is delicious. Gardenias and jasmine bloom in abundance. In the afternoon after a morning of sun, the fragrance is intense.

I'm doing this in a bit of a hurry...and it does feel rather strange to be looking at snow when it's all sunny outside, albeit cold...these are from last week when we had snow on the 25th (a light snow...but it came down in a hurry...was mostly gone by evening). The top one shows Chuck Hayes in the right corner and the bottom one has the Kleims...which is right in front of the mushrooms with a hellebore behind it...a bit hard to see. Anyway, I think...hope...these are clickable...although, they are not the best of shots. You can tell the gardenias are in a protected area by my front door...especially the Kleims...this faces east and without that protection, not an area I would normally site them in...but, hey, I also wanted to smell them when I came in and out...and what better place than the front door?!

What, you may wonder, is the big deal about one single gardenia blossom?? I'll tell you. Gardenias are terribly difficult here and after surviving two zone 7 winters, this is my very first blossom from Chuckie! I'm so excited! (And, to think I almost missed it.) Alas, I see no other buds...but one can hope. . .

The gardenia bush continues to bloom. The sun warms the blossoms and releases a very deep fragrance at the entrance at the front door. This bloom is the major one for the year but the plant will continue to produce a few blossoms through December!
I deadhead the flowers once they start to fade to yellow. I have a special soil mixture that I am going to add to top dress the plants. Because these plants are under cover (and since it never rains in the summer), I will hose the plants every few weeks to wash off dust from the leaves.

The previous owners of my home had a brilliant landscaping idea. They planted gardenias flanking both sides of the front door in an alcove area. According to most gardening books, these plants shouldn't have survived in this location. However, they survive and thrive. This time of year the first blooms of the season are starting to pop. Beside being a visual treat the fragrance is intoxicating. An added benefit of being in an alcove is that fragrance is captured and is concentrated.

I am still under the weather, but managed to get myself outside to my garden. I didn't step foot in it yesterday and heaven forbid I do it two days in a row.. As soon as I stepped out of the front door I could smell it.. The exact same scent that my wedding bouquet was.. My gardenia's are in bloom.. What a pleasant suprise and way to pick up the spirit.. The sight and smell of the wonderful gardenia..

My nose catches the sweet fragrance of gardenia as I walk to the mailbox each day. Without even thinking, I am irresistably drawn to place my nose right up close to this flower for another wift of its potent scent. A few cut flowers placed in a bowl will soon envelope the entire room in fragrance. This pretty plant has a commanding presence in the garden when it is in bloom. She makes it difficult to ignore her.
