Ivy-leaf Geranium Pelargonium peltatum (pe-lar-GO-nee-um) (pel-TAY-tum)
For Ruby Tuesday I have an Ivy-leaf Geranium that is really red this time. These plants are great for containers and seem to be getting better with more introductions. There are some really beautiful shades available. This one only came with a generic tag so the variety is a mystery. I generally try and find cooler conditions for my Ivy-leafs because they can stall, bloom wise, a bit in the heat of the summer. They are really worth having in the garden and seem to flower most of the winter inside the Conservatory, which is an added bonus. This was shot with the 60mm Nikkor-Micro lens last week. . ..

This is a Biokovo Geranium, a native of Russia. I don't know why I thought this was the Polemonium or whatever it was called~ that thing died in the drought, apparently~ haven't seen hide nor hair of it, this year. . . .

My Geranium is blooming again. I've had her for years and it amazes me how resilient she is. I've also assigned a gender to her and I'm not really sure why. It may be because she is red and the color does have some immediate associations for me. My first job in NYC was with the men's design team at Liz Claiborne and there was a red that was always preferred throughout all the divisions- Liz Claiborne red- used over and over, almost a branded red. The source was a leather glove that Liz actually owned. Its framed with chunks chopped off for color standards over the years. . ..

These two pictures were taken at Wave Hill last summer. The sunlight was lighting the golden foliage nicely. I like plants with golden foliage for accents in the garden. Over the years I have become more and more agreeable to having yellow in the garden. When I was growing up our nursery grew large crops of Geraniums and it is amazing to me the cultivars and choices that are available today. Here is a link to a big grower of different fancy types. I am not sure about their customer service or their plants but the have an extraordinary collection offered. . . .

See these spindly little sticks in the basement light stand?
Well, these puppies are the geraniums I uprooted last fall and stashed in a dark basement corner.
Now it's time for them to strut their stuff, or at least put down some serious roots and then swing into summer action. . . .

Zonal Geranium Pelargonium x hortorum 'Venus' (pe-lar-GO-nee-um) (hor-TOR-um) Synonyms: Fish Geranium, Horseshoe Geranium
This was a pretty Geranium that I grew last year. Actually it is still going since I dug it up and potted it for the house. I did cut it way back and it is starting to flourish again. Zonal Geraniums are available in a host of named cultivars and colors. I always grow a few Geraniums just for old time sake and the last couple of years I have been very impressed with my kind of random cultivar selections (whatever the nursery had when I was there). Geraniums like loamy, well-drained soil that isn’t allowed to get too dry. They benefit from fertilization and dead-heading the spent blossoms. . . .

Wordless Wednesday

This is a photo of Johnson’s Blue Geraniums. It’s a hardy perennial geranium. I posted about this flower recently and I said that my geraniums have been looking more purple than blue lately.
I took the photo above a in May last year. Perhaps these geraniums are bluer in the cool spring weather and darker or more purple in color later in the season? Either that or perhaps my soil composition changed last year. I guess I’ll have to do a soil test. . .

Cranesbill Geranium 'Jolly Bee' (jer-AY-nee-um) Synonyms: Hardy Geranium
Seems weird not to be posting some rose pictures. I was going to start calling this blog Digital Rose Pictures.com for awhile but now it is back to the regularly scheduled content. Seriously, the Rose Festival was a lot of work but it was also a lot of fun and a learning experience for me. I still have a few rose pictures left over that I will probably be posting one at a time over the next few weeks.. . .

Geranium pratense 'Hocus Pocus' Meadow Geranium, Meadow Cranesbill
I was looking through a catalog and saw some attractive perennial Geraniums, in particular the G. phaeum. Here's a photo from the BBC website. I thought to buy it but we had already ordered so many other plants I just crossed it off the list. We were at Lowes the past weekend buying a toilet flapper and just cruised through the garden center. To my delight they had some G. pratense 'Hocus Pocus' for 1/2 off so we bought a few. Not the G. phaeum I wanted but a beautiful plant in any case. I can easily see that this could be another plant collecting obsession as there appears to be over 300 species of annual and perennial Geraniums. . . .

Widow's Walk
I picked up this geranium at our town's garden club plant sale. It's known as Mourning Widow or Phaeum, a rather grim moniker indeed. Though when compared to its cheery, window-box cousins, this one does seem a bit more serious.
