Our iris bed is blooming and the flowers ar eso beautiful. I just wanted to share what they look like. Our mailperson keeps on snapping them off (I assume with her mailbag). I wonder if we will have to divide these soon because there are so many.

Short Iris x albicans ( cemetary white ) story

Southern Bulb Company via Southern Bulb Company on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

After loosing my camera on my last traveling experience, I have been hesitant to take it with me on flying trips. Lately I have had to do a lot of flying which means no camera, but I should have my nerve up soon!

Yesterday I heard from a lady in Texas about some bulbs that have been in her family for several generations. We hear many of stories and I thought I would share this one with you. . .

Five Good Things

Dirt Under My Nails via Dirt Under My Nails on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

While I've been ignoring the back yard for a spell, a glance outside registered a bit of blue. My iris! I have five different stalks of blue iris blooming! Too bad the lighting wasn't right for my camera. I should get a new one. But five in bloom, with several more on the way.

Part of one of my peonies seems to have died. Might have been frost damage. Not sure. But there's still plenty of plant left.

Just yesterday, the Iris reticulata 'Harmony' opened. It seemed as if they popped up out of the ground overnight and then all of a sudden, there were blooms. Amazing what a little warmth, spring rains and longer daylight will do. Even more amazing is what results from the little bulbs planted in the fall, once spring comes. . . .

Dutch Iris Flowered in 60 days: South Florida

I planted dutch iris bulbs (Miss Saigon variety) from a box store 60 days ago. This morning I noticed the first bloom.

Over the past 60 days, the weather has gone from 50-90 and we've had less than 10 days of rain. It receives 55 mins of irrigation once per week. They get filtered morning and afternoon sun. They look very much like young garlic (before they bloom). . . .

Siberian Iris, Hardy Elegance

Ilona's Garden Journal via Ilona's Garden Journal on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

Siberian irises are one of my favorite garden plants, and they hold a sentimental value as well. Growing up, we had an impressive stand of a deep purple variety that I believe was "Caesar's Brother" that old centurion of perennial gardens. For me, they were something out of the Japanese prints my father was partial to, and my mother mistakenly called them "Japanese iris", but I now know them by their proper name, Iris siberica. No self-respecting Japanese iris, Iris ensata, would have survived in the somewhat dry and partly shady garden near a garage and competing with tree roots. But the Siberian soldiered on and thrived through cold snow and frozen winters, droughty summers, and all the Midwest climate could throw at them. . . .

If you are here for Wordless Wednesday scroll down to the next post.

I originally planned to have Impatiens as my ‘ABC’ photo but I was foiled as when I got to work on Tuesday I found I had forgotten my memory card. Duh! I usually keep extras in the truck but since I have been out shooting a lot they are filled up. The one that I had ‘cleaned’ was sitting on my desk. I might invest in a couple of larger cards so they don’t fill up all the time. Since I do shoot a lot of pictures (shush, I should be working during some of that time) I have to periodically go through my hard drive and get rid of the pictures I am not going to use. . . .

Spring in Review

Colors Of The Garden via Colors Of The Garden on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

Spring has passed into summer, and time has flown. I've been as busy as a bee, and too tired most nights to do much on the computer. With Daylight Saving we tend to stay outside and work in the gardens and yard, and then eat a late supper.
Thanks so much to all for your visits and comments. I so much appreciate hearing from you. I'll try to catch up on my blog reading this week.

I've been trying to sort out some of the hundreds of photos I've taken during the past couple of months....choosing just a few to put on the blog. You can well imagine what a job that is, because a good many of you can relate to being "camera-maniacs"! By the time I've sorted a few days worth I'm beginning to nod off, and too tired to do a post.

I was out the door and onto the tractor by 4:20 this morning, heading for a day of work at our new site. The morning was a chilly 42 degrees and I layered two coats and a sweatshirt before embarking on the five mile ride. Last night's rain must have encouraged the critters to sleep in this morning as I didn't see anything on the ride down. It's downhill most of the way but still takes more than half an hour. I leave early so I can avoid traffic and just after I pulled off Route 2 this morning, a stream of tractor trailers headed west. . . .

Garden Surprises

A Gardening Year via A Gardening Year on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

There is one clump of Japanese iris in my yard that has consistently been the last iris to bloom each year. Only after all of the other iris, bearded, Japanese and Siberian, have finished does it bloom. For a long time I blamed it on the shade. It was growing quite close to an enormous holly bush. My neighbors removed that bush years ago, allowing more sunlight into that bed. Everything took off, especially the Blaze rose that had been struggling since before I moved into this house. The poor thing had been climbing the holly bush in its desperate search for light. Still, the laggard iris bloomed last. . . .

A Few Wave Hill Iris

I went to Wave Hill yesterday and of course saw a lot of neat and strange plants. I have been there about a hundred times before but I always see a couple of new things. I am talking trees and established plantings so I don’t know how I missed them but I saw a couple of things I hadn’t noticed. I hadn’t really seen their Iris blooming before. There weren’t a lot of cultivars but what they did have was interesting and unusual. I didn’t spend a lot of time taking pictures of them because I find it a difficult flower to photograph. The rest of the gardens had really taken off since the last time I had been there in April. I will probably post a few more pictures of my trip during this week. I have 58 hours of work planned for this week and it shouldn’t be a problem if the weather cooperates. . . .

Black Iris-A Garden Surprise

Mr Brown Thumb via Mr Brown Thumb on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

I had wanted a black Iris for my garden for a while now but every time I bought one it turned out to be a color other than the "black" was looking for in the garden. I eventually gave up on trying to find this color flower and one day found a boxed rhizome of an Iris that was suppose to bloom brown. Well a year after I planted it the first blooms have emerged and I see that I didn't get the brown flower I purchased-instead it is "black.". . .

Iris

Gotta Garden via Gotta Garden on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

Exciting times in the garden these days! Not quite as exciting as Daylily Days, but pretty darn close! So much is going on that it's tough to come in here and tie myself to the computer! Also, I'm pretty slow at posting...hmm, I need to perfect the ten minute post! That would work! Anyway, here are some iris pictures...with more to come!

This is Japanese Roof Iris (Iris tectorum). It's pretty special to me as it came from the MWH and really did come from Japan! A long ago volunteer in the garden contributed some that had been brought back after WWII. Isn't it neat to have things with a history in your garden! I think so. I did have a white variety and am hoping it's just behind this purple one. Purple, mind you, not the blue that is showing up here.

This is a not-so-swell picture of Iris Crisata. I have had a hard time capturing light purples or lavender (and white). Maybe someone will share some photo tips (please!)...besides getting a better photographer, of course. . .
