I was interviewed by Marilyn Dickey for a Washingtonian magazine piece on gardening -- have not seen it myself yet, but others have an told me I'm quoted in it and it is a good article. Must say that I love the colors and look of their current May 08 cover. I'll need to run out to the store and pick up a copy this weekend. At their web site I see here that we are cited as an area garden resource which is always nice.
I'm spending this rainy day trying to get as many things mailed as humanly possible before yet another postal rate increase takes effect. I think the USPS is trying to kill all us small business folk!

Organic Gardening Magazine is the leading monthly publication in its field and continues the legacy of J.I. Rodales original relationship between the declining American soil and healthy American people.
Prevention of human illness starts with a basically healthy diet, using healthier soil, natural techniques and generally learning to steward the land rather than devastate it, as is so often done in traditional agriculture. . .

Yes, April is National Garden Month, but we all know every day is "gardening day," right?
Here is the online link to this week's The List: Top Home & Garden Events on page 22 of today's print edition in the Washington Examiner. You can find the Examiner in the many red street-boxes around town. I saved a screen capture of the listing as a JPG and posted it here -- which you can click on to read at 100%. This daffodil photo was taken in the test field outside of Brent & Becky Heath's home in Gloucester , VA. I was thrilled to finally be able to visit them on Monday for the GWA regional meeting and took so many pictures I filled up all my memory cards, which is quite a feat in just one afternoon! They'll be hosting several walk tours there this month and I urge you to get down there asap while the blooms are still brilliant.

I have an article on page 28-29 of the new issue of Washington Woman Magazine. Christine McIntyre, Co-Publisher of Washington Woman, writes in her page 6 Publisher's Note (aka Editor's Letter), "a useful garden article by Kathy Jentz, owner of Washington Gardener Magazine. In “Seeing Green,†Kathy details some of the many home and garden shows in our area this spring which will give you fresh ideas for any indoor or outdoor project." The article is accompanied by my side-bar, "5 Home & Garden Show Shopping Tips.". . .

I've posted a few photos of this garden below. More photos of this garden can be found in this photo album along with shots of other client gardens. Also watch for a write up on this garden in an upcoming issue of Sunset Magazine.

I have an article in the April issue of Alabama Gardener. It is a garden profile of John and Lynn Ingwersen's garden in Killen, Alabama (just outside of Florence).
Here are a few photos that I took of their garden last year (some of these appear in the article, some don't) -

The big news around these parts at the moment is my imminent return to work after nigh on a year of maternity leave (non-parents: do not describe this as a "break" or I might have to get all punchy on you). I won't be going back to my old job as deputy news editor at Guardian Unlimited, however. I have a shiny new job, and one that's - gulp - gardening related. I shall be editing the gardening pages of the Guardian's Weekend magazine. It's a part time post, which will give me time to spend with my ever-more entertaining...

Am I the last one to find out about this?
We were in a café in Richmond over the weekend, and said café is also something of a bookstore - just a few shelves of used books. BUT, they had some interesting garden titles, among them Bloom Book: Horti-culture for the 21st Century by Li Edelkoort. Had it not been for the price tag ($75) I would have bought it. . . .

I'm founder of that group and a few folks have made the connection. Since a photo of my "dancing" runs without, my cover has been totally blown. I'd plead the 5th, but it is a bit late for that now! I received a note today from a subscriber: "Could you get the magazine out each issue in time that the whole calendar of events could be pertinent?!"
I understand this subscriber's frustration. I've been round and round with the Post Office, and basically the answer is no. They can't figure out why sometimes issues are delivered late either, and there's nothing I can do to help them out with this, according to their official response. . . .

The March-April issue is finally hurling its way through cyberspace, in pieces. At its next destination it will be reassembled and hit the presses. (Except for that last part, it sounds like Star Trek.) This is the biggest issue we've ever produced at 72 pages plus the 4-page wrap for Plantasia, the Buffalo flower show.
Tomorrow I'll be leaving for the Syracuse show, CNY Blooms, which starts Thursday. The new issue won't be there until Friday, but I'll have copies of the Directory, which was also a great issue this year. Please try to stop by my booth, #75. I won't be there the entire time due to family obligations, but am planning for Thursday morning, Friday and Saturday mid-morning until close and Sunday all day.

Joy, joy, joy! The February 2008 issue of Sunset magazine is out, and I've finally gotten my hands on a copy. Why am I so excited about this particular issue? I'm in it! Heavy Petal is featured in their "In the West" section, and I'm thrilled to bits. It's just a short write-up, but it manages to perfectly capture the spirit of Heavy Petal. Monday, January 21, 2008 A very cold morning here on the mountain. It's 12.2 below zero right now and the wind that pounded the house much of the night is subsiding a bit but the wind chill is certainly still a consideration. There had to have been a bunch of very cold people in Green Bay football land last night where the temperature was -4 and the wind chill was -24. I suspect that after the game, medical centers had visitors with common problems of frostbite. . . .

Sunday afternoon—We're just putting the finishing touches on this year's Directory, and I'm really excited to get it out to you. This issue has been a huge amount of work, but it's been worth it! It's so gratifying to see people, readers and advertisers alike, take advantage of this great compilation we put out every year. (I think it's the compulsive shoppers who love it the MOST.)
Here's a preview of the cover. Of course, I've used all my own photographs. Because I can.
If you're a subscriber, your copy should arrive in about a week. If not, you can start looking for it in your usual haunts starting Friday. If your usual haunts are now closed for the winter, never fear. We bring copies of the Directory to all the big events in the region throughout the year. Or drop me a line via the site or by commenting here.

Now you can have your yogurt and get a free gardening magazine, too! Stonyfield Farm and Organic Gardening are teaming up to offer a special deal for gardeners. From now through January 31, 2008, if you mail in four (clean) specially-marked lids of Stonyfield yogurt, they'll sign you up for a FREE one-year subscription to Organic Gardening magazine.
I already subscribe to Organic Gardening and I love it. It's one of the few gardening magazines I've seen that has great information on growing vegetables. And they're good articles, too, with detailed information and growing tips that are relevant to "newbies" and "masters." It's not just a bunch of glossy photos of meticulously cared for perennial borders. I'm a big fan.

There are several excellent gardening publications out there and if I subscribed to all of them, I'd never actually get out into my garden for burying my nose in them. But one that I pore over from glossy cover to glossy cover is Horticulture.
While it has a few more advertisements than I'd prefer, every other feature of this magazine keeps me entertained for several hours and it's one of the items listed in My Favorite Things. It's chock full of great gardening ideas and advice with gorgeous photos to go along with it. . ..

Dealing with Deer is the Jan/Feb '08 issue cover story of Washington Gardener Magazine and obviously on the minds of many local folk who have seen their yards recently decimated by hungry deer. Today's MNCPPC press release (here) describes the public's reactions to a recently announced deer-control hunt expansion and it is eye-opening. Things sure have changed in the last 10 years! A decade ago this kind of thing was vociferously protested as cruel and inhumane. Now the hunts are actually being welcomed and encouraged by area residents. In their current large numbers they are no longer so Disney-cute. Instead, the deer are being seen as a disease-carrying, destructive scourge on the level of roaches, pigeons, and rats. See our current issue for the latest methods local gardeners are using to deal effectively with this plague.
