Bustani, which I’m told means garden in Swahili, is the name Steve and Ruth Owens gave to their small farm just south of Stillwater, Oklahoma. Steve is the former host of the popular PBS gardening show, Oklahoma Gardening. After he spoke at the Oklahoma Horticulture Society meeting last month, I decided I needed [...]

Every morning, during the school year, I drive down a certain highway. From the road, for about a month every spring, I see the top of a large tree clothed in nothing but light, buttercup, yellow blossoms, the color and texture of the finest cream.
This spring, I decided to see the tree up close. [...]

Bristol’s Garden Center to Give Away Free Trees (seedlings) to Children Through “Pet Tree” Project
Bristol’s Garden Center will give away free trees (seedlings) to children during their Annual Spring Open House April 5th and 6th. Bristol’s is embarking on this “Pet Tree” project in order to encourage families to plant a tree together as a fun family activity, and to help kids learn about the joys of nature, planting and the positive impact trees have on the environment. . .

Dear Readers,
Some of you will be brave enough to come and hear me speak tomorrow at the Boise Flower and Garden Show. Some of you will be brave enough more than once. The first session is titled: The Good Earth: Beautiful, Bountiful Beds and Borders. In one hour, I will have just enough time to whet your appetite for this pressing front page topic. The mission, should you chose to accept it, is to grow as many edible plants as possible on your little patch o’ land. For some of you, that patch will be five acres, complete with cows and chickens. For the rest of us, probably 1/6th of an acre -give or take a few square feet and subtracting the house from the middle of it. Some folks have already downsized and are happy chillin in their townhouse or condo. For you, patio gardens. . .

While the "official" opening day for the nursery will be next Saturday, March 29th, we're working at the nursery quite a bit getting it ready and we'll be on-site this Saturday the 22nd and in and out quite a bit next week as well. If you find yourself in our neck of the woods, look for our signboard on NE Fremont at the corner of NE 51st Avenue. If the signboard is out, we're there.
For more information, including a map & directions go here.
We've brought in lots of great new plants this week! See you soon.

The last frost date here is April 25th, and I'm so impatient! I can't wait to cruise through lots of nurseries, especially a local native plant nursery I recently learned about. Unlike most years, when I buy a ton of plants that end up living in the driveway for a while since I don't really have a place for them, this year I should have plenty of space for new plants. As I mentioned in a previous post, my husband took a chain saw to a long bed of Nandina bushes in our backyard. So after the dirty work of installing some raised beds, I will have a blank canvas. . . .

Since nothing is blooming in my yard and my wife convinced me that Northwest Flower & Garden Show would be a little too busy for our young girls (I know she was right, as usual) We decided instead to go on a nursery tour, I normally get my plants from our closest nursery or the local home and garden center but was curious what the other dozen or so nurseries in my area had to offer. We didn't bring anything home (little too early for vegetable seedlings) but did get some pictures that spring was not too far away.

Have you ever wondered how some of your favorite products are selected to appear in your local nursery or greenhouse? What about why one brand of tractor is used by landscape company A and another brand by landscape company B? Like the fashion industry, the horticultural space has their own fashion shows all around the country. Recently, I got the chance to attend the NE Grows show held at the Convention Center in Boston.
The great aspect of these shows is the diver...

I placed my order with Shooting Star Nursery online and received the plants within a week. They called to tell me that the Cypripedium orchids I ordered wouldn't be ready until next spring but they could send me the rest of my order or opt to have everything sent in the spring. Well being an instant gratification sort, I opted to have the partial order sent.
Last Friday the UPS man left a bright red Budweiser box which turned out to be my order from Shooting Star. So that's one way they cut down on the cost of shipping and they have a recycling ethic which already sets them apart from other mail order nurseries in my book. . . .

We are home from our annual trip to the coast. This year we stayed at Blue Mountain Beach, close to the Destin area in Florida. Eight days of rest and relaxation! The weather, unfortunately, wasn't all that cooperative. The first half of the week was filled with clouds and some rain but the latter half was sunny and nice. To top it off, there was a beautiful full moon. Returned to find that we got over 4 inches of rain at home. That was nice!. . .

Some of us GardenWebbers from the Florida Forum spent the morning at Seminole Springs Antique Rose & Herbs, an organic grower not far from Mt. Dora, Florida. Tracy, the owner, was kind enough to open her shop on Sunday for us to hang out. We hung out for an hour or so there, exploring the scores of herbs she has. We then swapped some of our own plants before heading for a nice lunch in Sanford. Dutch Lavender. Tracy tells me it doesn't bloom much, but it's a pretty silver and has all the fragrance of regular (French) lavender... and it survives our summers!. . .

We had a grand time at Windmill Nursery's open house last night. The food was delicious, the wine was wonderful, and the people all friendly and fun. There was even live music! (hopefully the slide-show will show up here..I am never, ever sure about these things!) Of course I had to buy a few plants (10% of all yesterday's sales were donated to Wind Youth Services which helps homeless teens.) which I have been out planting this morning. (the plants, not the teens) Now its time to scuttle off to tend to The Nephew's yard and then to help Angela ready her yard for her upcoming interview with Sacramento Magazine! If the slide show didn't work then I'll post pictures later. Right now I gotta get my hands dirty! Toodles~

Great good mornings to you from the mountain above Peacham Pond where the loons call, in competition with the harsh voices of two crows sitting in an adjacent white pine. It's 31 degrees and the dark clouds don't seem to be moving much. Yesterday was a good day to get some planting done because today is supposed to be wet with snow showers in higher elevations. We are at 1500 feet so I don't think we'll see the white stuff quite yet. . . .
