Flowering picking up, hopefully not too early for the September Miranda Exhibit. On the left top, my awarded Cattleya Jenmanii, larger flowers and more flowers than ever before. On the right a nice alba, but I have no clue what it is. . . .

Top left: This Cattleya Mossiae does not appear to know that it should have flowered three months ago. Not bad for its firest time, note the solid lip and the flaring. On the right a Cattleya Percivaliana named Gabriela. . . .

 More from the Orchid Show
These shots are from the Orchid Show at The NYBG in March. I just found the memory card they were on. Originally I took a couple of pictures off the card and made a Black and White Orchid post and then lost track of the card. I have been going through some other downloads to make more room on my hard drive. Usually I would sort through the pictures before I put them on the computer but sometimes in the interest of time and having a clean card to go shooting with everything gets downloaded. . . .

Yesterday we got up before dawn to drive down to Everglades National Park to meet a friend of Chris' to go see some Vanilla barbellata, leafless vanilla,
in bloom. Now, it was a beautiful morning when we started out, even if I didn't get breakfast (grumble...), but the hike out wasn't too bad to start, at least
until we had to go off the trail. . .

Slowly getting back to things after the China trip, I actually spent a lot of time taking pictures today, after reading a book about photography. Not many flowers, there were many when I got back, but they wilted, but something is always there...

This week was the Natural Sciences Society Orchid Show, I took a few plants, but for complex reasons was unable to take pictures. Since I was away, I had not been checking my plants, so I did not notice the three Cattleya Aclandiae from Brazil were all in flower. Pity people could have compared how different they are:

The secret to growing orchids? A sunny corner kitchen window. This magic orchid-growing window faces south and west. I water every few days with a quick squirt from the kitchen sprayer. For added humidity, the pots sit on pebble-filled drainage trays and I leave the accumulated water. . .

In a previous post, I mentioned that I had another orchid blooming, though I'm not sure which Phalaenopsis it is. It was labeled 'Wedding Promenade,' but its spots tell me it isn't. It's not a huge deal to me, but I do like knowing a plant's name if possible. This is one of my bargain orchids I picked up several weeks ago at Lowe's. . . .

Rainbow Orchid Vanda Trevor Rathbone ‘Banjong’ (VAN-duh)
One thing I wanted to do on Saturday was take a nice pictures of a Vanda Orchid. They are among my favorite types of Orchids. Photographing them in the past as proved to be something I am not really good at. I got a few pictures on Saturday from among the beautiful collection of Vandas that were displayed. They had an almost black one, some nice purples, a red one and a yellow one. They also had some species, which I hadn’t really seen before. . . .

Black and White Orchids
Yesterday I attended the New York Orchid Show again. The flowers were still fresh and I saw a couple of Orchids that either I missed last time or were new. I took both of my Point and Shoot cameras (or compact cameras as I like to call them) with me to try and shoot a couple of Black and White images. I call them compact cameras since they are capable of running on full manual settings, if you want. I can never believe all the technology that is packed into these little boxes. I think that Orchids are detailed enough to give some interest to a black and white photo and once the magnificent color is stripped away you are down to the shape of the flower. . . .

I've always have had difficulty photographing this Dendrobium orchid. It is tall and gangly and the color which should be a dark red purple as in the foreground flowers, is never captured right by the camera. I guess the backlighting doesn't help as it bring out the mottling in the petals. I tried to get the same effect as the white Phalaenopsis orchid but I had to place the Dendrobium in the bathtub to have it bathe in sunlight :) Well no matter, there it is.
We bought this orchid about 4 years ago and it has bloomed reliably every year though it didn't have many flowers this year.

While shopping at Sam's this week I ran across one of the orchids that I had purchased a month ago for my friend that turned 90 years old. The plant was not in bloom anymore, so the price was reduced from $30.00, to $6.00. I quickly grabbed one up, and only one because my husband was along. if he had not been with me, I am not sure how many of them would have come home with me. . . .

I have always liked Cattleya Loddigessi from Brazil. I find it very beautiful and delicate. However, the ones I had were not doing very well. Basically, the plants flowered erratically, did not have many roots and the leaves would dehydrate like in the picture below on the left. I had them potted in fir bark with charcoal like all my Cattleyas. This seemed to happen to other people in Caracas, so I decided to experiment and took a small plant and tied it to cork instead of having it in a pot with fir bark. The results were immediate and incredible. . . .

It's always nice to come back home, look in the orchid room and think there is nothing new, then upon closer inspection there is this flower and the other oe and by the time you stop counting there are at least six new blooms:

Top left, Cattelya Loddigessii from Brazil. I love this flower, but it was not a great grower in my orchid room, then two years ago I switched one to cork and it did great, now all of them are on cork and the difference is incredible, next week the "pilot" of that should flower and I will show it in detail. The one above was the second one I switched and it's still a small plant. On the right an Oncidium, I don't know where I got it or what it is but it is very nice and the picture came out really well. It is a long stem above a meter and a half with dozens of flowers. . . .

Calanthe Orchid (kal-AN-thee)
The Orchid collection at Planting Fields was beautiful and bountiful. There were some that I hadn’t seen before and some common ones. These two Calanthe Orchids were really out in force and I couldn’t help snapping a few photos as I strolled by. The first two pictures are Calanthe ‘William Murray’. I didn’t find much reference material on this cultivar but did find out that the genus Calanthe has about 200 species, most of which are native to Asia. The 200 species includes both evergreen and deciduous plants. That is a new one on me, as I didn’t know there were any deciduous Orchids. . . .

However, I made the mistake of taking only my macro lens to take pictures of single orchids, that the overall pictures I too with my phone, simply because I had to show you how wonderful it was.
