Make a beautiful and fun gift for someone special!
The holidays are just around the corner, and kids will be home from school for vacations. This is a fun time, and perfect to start to grow a Parsely Present, or, even if you don't have kids, just grow some parsely for yourself!. . .

This is how gardening with the wild creatures in mind (in addition to the gardeners) can be a little tricky. I planted a whole row of parsley so that there would be plenty for us and for butterflies. But the stand was covered with SO MANY black swallowtail caterpillars that I couldn't bring myself to cut any -- even when I needed a bunch for a special recipe. To Mendy's dismay, I brought storebought parsley home to spare ours for the butterflies. Next year I may have a row of parsley and a dill plant in every raised bed in hopes of having enough for us all. . . .

Time for a new suite of photos documenting my experiment.
Let's start with my thripsberidden herbgarden. I do apologise for the blured photo; I have a disagreement with my camera. I want to take nice close ups, it says it can't. However, I've sprayed this garden with clean water from the dryer several times a day this week. The plants seems to do better, although they are not 100% healthy yet. The new leaves of the parsley have less dry spots than the old ones. I still don't know if this treatment is enough, but it looks hopefull. . . .

Oh sure, it looks like it is just a garnish. It looks like it might be innocent and green and... and... green. But it's not. It's the Herb of the DEVIL! *Cue creepy music for effect* Oh yes, save the souls of the virgins in your house. Lock the children far away. The parsley is coming to get you all.
With all the superstition that surrounds this innocuous herb, I am genuinely amazed that this . . .

Last year, I did not grow nearly enough parsley. What parsley we did grow came up sparsely (Parsley, sparsely. It feels like an Ogden Nash poem…), and it never felt as abundant as, well, grabbing a bunch at the store. You know those store bunches: fat and happy and usually more of the flat-leaf variety than you can possibly use before it goes limp?
That didn’t happen in my garden. . . .

I had some Italian flat leaf parsley in the garden this winter. While out of town, the weather got warm and sunny. The parsley bolted and created this seed head. Reminds me of Queen Anne's Lace.

The parsley plants I seeded indoors a couple of weeks ago are getting their second set of leaves now. As if on queue for St. Patrick's Day, they look like miniature shamrocks.
Last year, I didn't have good fortune with my parsley growing endeavors. I sowed seeds directly into the garden -- on about five different occasions in various areas of the plot -- but nothing sprouted until about October. And then the tiny plants went into their dormancy for the winter. . . .

I will add the Italian one to the stuffing like I always, do, but will also use this one for for potatoes with parsley. That is a family thing, one of the traditions I brought from my family for our holidays. . .

Reading Kim's recipe for herbed butter got me to thinking of laying down some parsley pesto sauce for the winter.
I gave my Italian Loose Leaf Parsley its end of summer hair cut and set to making the sauce. It's dead easy. . .

“Mom, what’s this green moss looking stuff on my plate?”
“That’s parsley, Johnny.”
“But Mom, do I have to eat it?”
No, Johnny, it’s just a garnish.”
“Now, Mabel,” Auntie Carmen pipes in, “you know that parsley is more nutritious than your broccoli.”
Auntie Brenda, who just can’t restrain herself jumps in next, “But it is also high in oxalates, which aren’t good for everyone, besides, who is going to eat a cup of parsley?
Johnny’s mom, Mabel, who’s already had enough pouts, “All right, all right, that’s about enough out of both of you. Can’t we just eat a meal in peace without a lesson on health and nutrition?”
Ignoring his Aunties, Johnny asks, “Mom, what’s a garnish?”
Mabel gives her sisters the evil eye and says, “Honey, it’s just a pretty decoration.”
Parsley is both a nutritious vegetable and a common decorative garnish. It is easy to grow, hardy, and not too particular about soil. . . .

I was told that it is hard to grow parsley from seed. A year ago I would have said ok and bought some plants instead. But a year ago I didn't know that it was almost impossible to grow lavender from seed and I did it. So this year I'm trying again with the lavender and I'm attempting to grow some parsley. . .
I'm so impressed! I've never been able to grow either one of these from seed
