Use Small Containers First
Start your seeds in small containers, such as yogurt, cottage cheese containers, or a milk carton, laid on its side (about 5cm deep), with the opposite side cut off (staple closed the end that was opened). Some people use egg cartons (expect to transplant quite quickly from such a small container). Make sure you put one or more holes, about half a centimeter in diameter, in the bottom of all these containers. If the holes are too big soil will fall out.
Egg and milk cartons, almost ready for seeds . . .

I got home from work tonight at 5:00, so I had a few hours that I could spend in the garden before it got dark. I needed to get my new grape vines planted. They have been in the packing material for about a week, and were starting to bud out, so I wanted to get them in. I am trying 3 different varieties, Canadice, Reliance, and Interlaken. . ..

The soil is workable. A bit too damp still, but I can ignore that small detail.
As is the case every year, the hubs had the usual fight with the rototiller. Apparently, just add oil and the motor will seize tight as a drum on you after it has started momentarily and then stalled. . . .

Yesterday was a lazy day (sort of) we did a bit of stuff around the house and as previously blogged I made a cheesecake and marinara sauce. Here is a picture of my finished cheesecake!
From what I remember eating (and I did it fast) it was quite tasty! We left our friend's house and came home and passed out. Today was much busier than yesterday, we watched a few hours of morning television and then got to gettin' on! I soaked my sweet peas over night and was ready to plant them but realized I did not have any potting soil so Sofia and I went to Home Depot, with a pit stop at the puppy store to take Sofia on a shopping spree. . .

Around here gardeners like to plan events in the garden according to Holidays. St. Patrick's Day is when they say you should plant peas, so I dutifully built my pea trellises and planted peas last Sunday (the day before St. Patty's Day). May Dreams Gardens is just a couple hours away from me and she planted peas on Sunday too. Maybe it's not just around here where gardeners shoot for pea planting on the Irish holiday because peas were planted in Skippy's Vegetable Garden on St. Patrick's day too. . . .

Let’s start at the very beginning
A very good place to start
Now that you are all enjoying a Rodgers and Hammerstein earworm like me, I can tell you spring has officially sprung at Blithewold. There’s something that happens in the 3rd week of February - have you noticed a change? We mark it in our calendars every year. The sun is a certain smidge higher in the sky so when it’s out - even if there’s a frigid wind like there’s been this week, the greenhouse toasts right up. The birds have noticed the change too and I’ve noticed them - just this week. . .

The last thing that I think that you need for a successful and easy to care for garden, is in my opinion, the hardest. The goal in your beds is to have no openings were you can actually see the soil or the mulch. The plants should grow together, just until they meet, and maybe mingle a little bit with each other. This is very difficult for me, because I have always read that you need to keep plenty of space between plants for good air movement. They need this to keep from getting mildew, and other diseases that plants get from being to close together. . . .

My Main Regret from Last Year’s Planting. As I look through my numerous seeds left over from last year, I realized that I succumbed to societal pressure when I decided what to order. Everyone plants xxx, so I should plant xxx. As a result, I spent a lot of time planting, nurturing, and devoting valuable resources to things we don't really eat. And I didn't plant things we eat a lot of. . . .

This year I'll use my fish tank light again as a good area to keep the soil warm for sprouting (>75F). It worked well for peppers last year. This year I'll plant peppers, tomatoes and squashes (cukes, zukes, watermelons, pumpkins) indoors. . . .

Hey all, I know this is slightly off topic, but I hope I can benefit from others' experience. I bought a huge quantity of bulbs this fall, and then I got sick and stayed that way for most of September and October (my kid started Kindergarten and I caught everything he brought home). So I have about 165 bulbs that never got planted. If the snow melts off can I plant them? What happens if I try to plant them in the spring? I might use some of the tulips by making little indoor bulb gardens and forcing them, but that won't use them up, and the allium are too tall for that.
