The Christmas Fern that hadn't unrolled on April 19th are now unrolled and providing plenty of inspiration in my everyday life. The colors and shapes are just so beautiful.

And I don't want to believe that I saw snow on the ground Saturday morning. I did not take a picture of it - I prefer to be in denial.
I am going to go ahead and garden and pretend that it is a normal spring. I need to do that. I need my sanity.
Here are my Packman Brocolli seedlings. I have them sitting on my patio table (that has been freed from the grape vines) "hardening off" so I can plant them in the garden later this week. They don't mind the cold and will do great. . . .

As noted earlier, the Pacific Tree Frog nightly singing contest seems to be having some affect on Maria's behavior. She found my little Ilidi tomato seedlings sitting in the kitchen after they sprouted and were removed from the "oven."
This one had the leaves nipped off and the other in the same pot was pulled out. Fortunately, another pot was not touched. So I added seeds and stuck this pot back in the "oven," while the survivor went out to the Maria-less garage under the light.

I always enjoy any seeds I required to start outdoors since they normally thrive with little effort from myself other than the occasional watering and given I live in the rainy Seattle area that does start until mid-June. Even if you have started many of your seeds indoors to extend your growing season some seeds should always start outdoors since they are sensitive to transplant shock. . . .

After our big push two Sundays ago, we took a break so this was my first trip back to the plot in two weeks. What a thrill to see the first of our seedlings emerge! Radishes, spinach, peas, and arugula that were sown on the 16th are beginning to emerge, no sign of the carrots yet ...
The broccoli starts and onion sets are settling in and starting to grow. Potatoes and shallots were planted on the 16th also, but won't be showing themselves for a while yet.

Is that what I think it is? I don't believe it! Is that green shoots coming through the ground? Yes, it certainly is. As the snow is receding it is showing me some of the feverfew plants that are starting to emerge through the debris of last year's plant. . . .

Bronze Amaranth Seedlings

Lemon Basil seedlings. I grew nine of these so I could donate a few to the COG plant auction in May.

“Ruby Red” Swiss Chard. I don’t really like eating this much, but it’s such a beautiful addition to the garden. I love how the first set of true leaves already look “swiss-chardy.”

Reminiscing over old pictures I found these two. One of my seedlings after I just planted them out. I always say that planting out seedlings every year is like sending your children off to school, I worry about them and feel very protective of them because I raised them from seeds and pampered them in my basement and putting them outside is almost just too traumatizing. Haha! This weekend I think I will plant my sweet pea seeds. I have plenty of large pots and it will be nice to put them to use. I am also starting to salivate over the thought of fresh herbs and tomatos. My roommate made a salad last night and the tomatos in it were tasteless, expensive, and hard. Nothing beats a tomato picked from the garden and still warm from the sun. This weekend Brian and I are going to our friends house and she said the land behind her shed is full of snowdrops (Galanthus). She said we could bring a shovel and that made me all hot and bothered!

I've been trying to raise my seedlings without a plant light. But they seem to be getting quite leggy. Especially the broccoli. To try to increase their light, I have suspended them right up against the south facing windows. Of course it would help if the clouds moved out of the way.

There were several questions asked on my last early tomato post so I thought I should expound on what has worked well for me. I have grown most of my vegetables and annuals from seed under lights for years. I have made many mistakes along the way and have developed a system that works well for me. There are a few simple tips that I have learned that might be helpful to you. The five most often overlooked tips for growing successful seedlings. . .

The highs continue to be 10 degrees below normal. I am so ready for spring. Ugh - more flurries are predicted for today.
Watching my seedlings in the basement grow helps me realize it really is spring and know that this snow won't last forever - even if it feels like it will!
The Red Acres Cabbage has sprouted.
The brocolli and brussells sprouts seedlings are growing taller and stronger.
And the tomatoes are even sprouting up!
The seedlings know and feel that it is spring. I can't wait for that first taste of spring lettuce and rhubarb crisp. Yum Yum!

I always get so excited when I see the first sprouts of the season. It is like everything is right with the world, the circle of life continues and warmer weather will be here soon! Like every year, the cool weather plants are sprouting first. The brocolli and brussells sprouts have all sprouted as well as some of the lettuce. I love gardening, I really do! I can't wait until I can taste the goodness these sprouts will turn into.
