The Baker Creek Spring Planting & Heritage Festival

Garden Desk via Garden Desk on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

It has been a whole week already since we were at the Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Spring Festival. We went both days and had a great time. It was fantastic! Sorry that it has taken me a week to post about it. We took several extra days and made a family vacation out of it. We also visited the Laura Ingalls Wilder home/museum, Lambert's restaurant, and the St. Louis Arch.

As for the Baker Creek festival, it is pretty hard to explain so I will show it to you instead. Following are many pictures taken at the festival.

There were lots of great farms selling plants and other vendors:

Spring weekends in May are busy enough, with all of the transplanting, dividing, seed sowing, rototilling, garden clean-up, pruning, raking, and garden center cruising, when you throw in two major flower shows - it can really get crazy. But we would not do it if we didn't love it, right? This past weekend hosted the New England Primrose Society show at Tower Hill Botanic Garden in Boylston, MA, a show we annually host at this weekend, a date which we share with the Seven States Daffodil Show. . . .

Live TV - Take 2

WashingtonGardener via WashingtonGardener on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

My NBC4 segment on container gardening got postponed due to technical difficulties. Ah, the thrills of live television. A nearby radio station had upped their signal last week and now any outdoor live recordings pick up their feed or have a loud hum in all the microphones. We tried it four different ways and if you watched you even saw a teaser for us "coming up." In the end though, they decided it'd be best to tape it inside and it will air tomorrow (Thurs 4/10 at 4pm -- should be close to the 4:50 block.) Pictured here is Veronica Johnson in our compromise indoor set-up. Such gorgeous weather outside today, too bad we could not use it.

The Day the Sun Stands Still

WashingtonGardener via WashingtonGardener on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

I'm trying to pin down a date to host our annual Open Garden and since the Summer Solstice worked well last year, I'm going to schedule around that again. Who know that there was so much leeway and controversy in the exact date. Some sources say Summer Solstice in 2008 is on June 20, others say it is June 21. I mean the longest day of the year, should be pretty easy to measure and confirm, right? Maybe leap year or global warning has a few folks thrown off their game. When I do the NBC News at 4 garden segment tomorrow (Wed. 4/9) I'm going to quiz weather guru Veronica Johnson on the exact timing. For now, I'm setting the Open Garden date as June 21. More details and invitation will be posted as the date gets closer.

I thought I had a great audience for Dazzling Desert Garden Design Ideas today. A nice, considerate, knowledgeable, attentive and eager group. That is heartwarming. I really like taking the questions afterward …..a chance for a little one-on-one, and to perhaps, help folks get their garden underway and going in a direction that will work for them. More than anything, I want to encourage people to color outside the lines in their gardens, to really have fun. . .

Volunteering for the Bay Friendly Garden Tour

An Alameda Garden via An Alameda Garden on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

The folks at StopWaste.org are looking for volunteers for this year's Bay Friendly Garden Tour on Sunday, April 27. I volunteered last year and really enjoyed the experience, so I'll be doing it again this year. This free self-guided tour offers a look at more than 30 public and private gardens throughout Alameda County that utilize bay-friendly gardening practices to build healthy soils, reduce waste, protect local watersheds and wildlife, and more. And as if that's not enough, the gardens look great! If you're in the area, check out the tour, or become a tour volunteer yourself. You'll have a great time and learn lots.

Some of you will be brave enough to come and hear me speak tomorrow at the Boise Flower and Garden Show. Some of you will be brave enough more than once. The first session is titled: The Good Earth: Beautiful, Bountiful Beds and Borders. In one hour, I will have just enough time to whet your appetite for this pressing front page topic. The mission, should you chose to accept it, is to grow as many edible plants as possible on your little patch o’ land. For some of you, that patch will be five acres, complete with cows and chickens. For the rest of us, probably 1/6th of an acre -give or take a few square feet and subtracting the house from the middle of it. Some folks have already downsized and are happy chillin in their townhouse or condo. For you, patio gardens. . .
