I knew what to expect from the kids, they knew what to expect form me ... we were humming along productively growing each day. When all of a sudden the principal said, "It's time to prepare the course catalog for next year." NEXT year? I'm barely starting THIS year !. .

I did get out with my camera. I do like the fact that I've got the transitional pH soil going on with this hydrangea. I really need to fertilize it with the rhododendron fertilizer next time to push it back to blue. I definitely do not want it to go all pink. And yes, that's all one bush. Yikes! It likes being pruned.

How to test your soil

Garden Detective via Garden Detective on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

Before planting anything (perennials, vegetables, trees, shrubs, etc.), it's important to make sure the soil in the area is suitable, as each plant has specific pH requirements. Readings of 7.0 are neutral. Readings above 7.0 indicate alkaline soil. Those below 7.0 are acidic. Soil on Long Island is generally acidic, so many plants will require amendments such as lime to thrive.

Click photo for a step-by-step slideshow

Vegetables thrive best in soil with a pH of 6.2-6.8; Lawns prefer 6.3-6.7, but should do fine anywhere in the 6.0-7.0 range; herbs like it a bit more acidic, around 6.5.

Have you fed your soil food web lately? What? You didn't know you had a soil food web? If you have any plants in soil, you have a soil food web. This complex network of beneficial soil creatures from earthworms, centipedes and millipedes, down to tiny bacteria, fungi and protozoa, all need to be fed some form of organic matter every year. If you have not fed yours lately or ever, your soil food web is a sorry group of creatures. When they are fed each year, they will perform absolute miracles for your lawn, your trees and shrubs, and all your gardens. . . .

A Gardening Accident Waiting to Happen

Doug's Garden Blog via Doug's Garden Blog on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

Here’s my take on one of the hottest gardening “solutions” being offered up to unsuspecting gardeners this season. An accident waiting to happen.

One of the biggest “solutions” being offered up by chemical gardening fans is the “environmentally-friendly” water absorbing chemicals. The premise is that you mix this material into your soil and it absorbs moisture. It then slowly releases this moisture for your plants. You have a way to fight off drought and water stress. . .

Xeriscape-Soil Improvement

North Country Maturing Gardener via North Country Maturing Gardener on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

Soil Improvement
The ideal soil in a water-conserving landscape does two things simultaneously: it drains quickly and stores water at the same time. This is achieved by increasing the amount of organic material in your soil and keeping it well aerated. Compost is the ideal organic additive, unless your xeriscape contains many succulents and cacti. These species prefer lean soil. . ..

danielle's garden blog via danielle's garden blog on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

The new brambles I planted are thriving despite the pH level of the soil being too alkaline. The soil is supposed to be between 6.0 and 6.8, so I need to add sulfur, which will make the soil more acidic. If I wanted to make it even more alkaline, I'd add lime.

How To Fix Poor Draining Soil

As the ground starts to warm up, many of us are getting ready to plant out new vegetables, trees, and flowers, but some soil isn't as ideal as it could be, and drainage if often a problem.

If you have poor draining soil, this can hinder good aeration for plant roots, and plants can actually drown, so you'll want to take care of the problem as soon as possible. . . .
