I've waited and waited for the perfect day to FINALLY plant my darling baby tomatoes but I'm not sure that even today -- May 11th -- is the right day. I've heard it's going down to 35 tonight! What's with these spring temps? (Nevermind the floods, thunderstorms, windstorms and tornadoes in the region lately...) I feel a bit silly complaining about such minor inconveniences when the news around the state and region is so frequently dire, as in the last round of tornadoes yesterday in Missouri and other parts of Arkansas. . . .

Well, I was going to do a "purple" post, since that is certainly a dominant colour in the garden this spring, but I think I'd rather just post random photos from the past few days (minus the two rainy ones) in the garden.

After a disappointing Saturday, weather wise, a beautiful spring day popped up on Sunday. And this little pansy also caught my attention. It has popped up in one of the little succulent pots that sit on the fence in the garden. I cannot imagine how a pansy ended up in this spot. . .

I feel like I'm always blaming my garden successes on serendipity... but maybe I don't give myself enough credit. I admit that I bought these 'Queen of Night' tulips on a whim because I was entranced by their beautiful moodiness... but made a conscious decision to plant them where they would fill in space in the spring garden, and play off of the light green emerging foliage of the goatsbeard and switchgrass. . .

This is the time of year is all about reuniting with my perrenials. There's the thrill of seeing who's returned. More than that, there's the thrill of seeing which plants are really succeeding.
Take for example our Star of Bethlehem plant. It came to our garden, via another's garden, two years ago right about the time I was starting this blog. I reported on how unpromising its prospects looked.
Then last year I was tickled to discover that it indeed found our little plot worthy of its roots. It not only returned, but also graced us with a few flowers.
And now, be it ever so humble, this year it's decided there's no place like our garden.

I can hardly wait to see what next year will bring.

My blogging has slowed down because I have been busy with school. As I have been busy writing papers and taking final exams, our yard has also been busy.Â
The Magnolia blooms are almost gone they were such a beautiful pink. Yesterday our neighbor was removing a tree and from what I can see they blew some of this magnolia to bits and they came over and apologized for actually knocking down one of the fences to my vegetable garden. They put it back up and it looks fine, I have not had the time to inspect it further.

It’s a beautiful day here in Toronto and I’m hoping to go outside shortly and get some gardening done. I still have to spring clean at least half of the back garden and all the roses need a trim. With all the snow cover we had over winter I don’t believe that I lost any plants, but I should have a final tally later today.Well if my tum stops hurting long enough for me to do some work that is. My Crohn’s is acting up bad this week. The other day I went outside and took some photos of the garden. We have five established Peonies and they’re all coming up:

Martha Rule #10: Make It Beautiful
I kept this rule in mind yesterday when prepping our home for the MVPC Spring Fling party. The day started off windy and a bit of rain but it cleared up after that and it was just a beautiful day. I would say that our party was a success here are a few pictures...

This is turning out to be one of the most beautiful springs, with blooming times that seem to rush in upon each other. The weather has given us the full effect of trees and plants that often get ruined in Ohio's fickle fluctuations. The only worry I might have is that things are a bit dry for this time of year. We had so much rain , with saturated ground and inundations that flooded the steams earlier in the season, but now all is quite dry. . . .

There's some unique aesthetics of springtime in Manhattan that I really enjoy. One of them is the renewed presence of private 'gardens' in the city. There are some real jewels as the one pictured above found on a street of brownstones in West Chelsea. There's also a certain look to them with their backdrop of paint or masonry- in taupes and terracottas that heightens the color of the flowers leaves, and shadows they throw. . . .

This is the message on my bathroom window. I think that you can tell that Mother Nature is not cooperating. My tulips have buds. I think at this point, we just see if the squirrels behave themselves. The rhodedendrons seem to have failed another year. Although, the buds that I thought I had spotted disappeared. Drats. I even pruned them last year.
Cherry trees throughout the neighborhoods are blossoming prettily. So, is the great white boulevard of pear trees outside of my development. Daffodils are lining the sides of the highway and exit ramps.

Five sandhill cranes flew low over our house a few days ago. The spring peepers are serenading us at night. I've started my annual attack on garlic mustard in the woods. The red-winged blackbirds are calling for mates. Ducks and geese are checking out the pond as a potential nursery. My crocus are finally in bloom. The dogwood buds are getting fatter. One son is at a home opener for the Detroit Tigers and the other son is at Vero Beach, Florida. And I start work in the gardens at Gene Stratton-Porter State Historic Site in a few hours.
Spring is here.

It may seem odd to admit to this, but every spring at around this time, I begin to wonder if my garden will completely fail to appear. Especially this year, when much of the beds are covered with a matted carpet of leaves and we really don’t know how much havoc was wreaked by the roofers when they cleaned up. I know they pulled a sweet autumn clematis out, chopped the mock orange to hell, and they scraped away a layer from almost every bed in order to make sure most of the nails and debris were gathered up. . ..
