A Bucket Week

Wicked Gardener via Wicked Gardener on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

I don't know about you, but my valuable weekend gardening time has just not seemed to be there. Too much fun stuff to do and not enough time to weed. So, out of desperation, I decided to challenge myself by picking a bucket of weeds each evening for a week. Above is my weed bucket that I carry around with me while weeding. It does not take long to fill it, especially when I'm also including bird of paradise prunings. I did two buckets tonight, mostly because I was motivated. Eventually I'd like to do a bucket week each month. I'd challenge all of you to do the same, but I now there are a few reasons why many of you can't: 1. its still April, and unless you live in the south, you may not even have weeds yet, and 2. many people can't get home in time. Even if you can't join me, please send your moral support. I'm famous for devising a plan and then totally abandoning it when the mood passes.

My Summer in a Garden

Cold Climate Gardening via Cold Climate Gardening on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

A small change in routine can make a big change in the garden I was the oldest of a large family, and I aspired to be a good girl. Not so much in the sense of morally superior; I wanted to do it...

Gardening is Hell On a Wardrobe

This Garden Is Illegal via This Garden Is Illegal on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

Well, that does it. I just did in my last pair of jeans that still had clean knees. I didn't mean to. I was just walking into the house, groceries in arms and clean jeans on. But I spotted the spiky rosette of an emerging dandelion. Can't have that and if I get it now it means less later on. So I just bent over to pull it out and... ...wouldn't you know it. There was a stem of quackgrass. . .

Give Me Shelter

An Iowa Garden via An Iowa Garden on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

The ice cold north wind blew and blew, and blew some more today, so if I wanted to work outside, I needed shelter. Therefore, I loaded up my old truck and headed over to the forty acre woodland preserve that I am volunteer managing. The woods is cut by deep ravines, so I hiked back into a south facing ravine, where the sun was shining, and the wind was blocked off. I'm currently working my way through the woods cleaning out untold thousands of multiflora roses. . .

Preferences in Futility

Cold Climate Gardening via Cold Climate Gardening on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

We all have our preferences in futility. I have at various times made different forms of this observation, but today it struck me again as I watched my Mom weed her flower garden. I wouldn’t do that, I thought. It wasn’t because I thought weeding was too hard–weeding is easy. It wasn’t because I hate [...]

Smilax And Pussy Cats

An Iowa Garden via An Iowa Garden on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

As related recently, I'm currently engaged in my annual weed pulling marathon (which this rainy year might better be called "garden re-discovery"). I always snort when I read some gardener prattling about how they love weeding... one afternoon in my garden would sober them up! I've been meaning for some time to take the plunge and get an IPod to help relieve the boredom while plugging away out there (I also want to get one because I can see the handwriting on the technological wall; the last time I was in Best Buy, the c.d. department had shrunk by half...

Deadheading my flowers

Gardening 4 Dummies via Gardening 4 Dummies on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

Yesterday I spent some time in the afternoon cleaning up my front garden. I had originally started on my new arbor project but the rain kept stopping and starting forcing me to keep the electrical cords away.

So, I had some time to kill and my garden was in dire need of some TLC. . .

For some reason, I love deadheading!
