Winter Sowing Update

My Skinny Garden via My Skinny Garden on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

Check out this Poppy! By far it seems like the Poppy (excluding the Himalayan Blue aka "Holy Grail" according to Kylee) and the Aster are doing better than anything else. I WS'd several varieties of Poppy back in January and several varieties of Aster in March.

I Have Green!

Happy Hobby Habit via Happy Hobby Habit on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

Two days ago, my WS jugs were frozen solid and sitting under snow.

I figured it would be a few more weeks of getting some decent warmth before I saw any germination at all. But...

sprouts in winter sown bottles!

Skippy's Vegetable Garden via Skippy's Vegetable Garden on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

bottles with labels hollyhock zebrina
shasta daisy tansy
dill onions
I have sprouts in my plastic bottles!!! Lots of them! Its very exciting.
Five of the 12 bottles have nice little sprouts today. They are:

Hollyhock Zebrina, Shasta Daisy Alaska, Wild Tansy, Dukat Dill, and Onions Sweet Yellow Spanish.

Only one problem is that all of the labels on the bottles have washed off. I checked my excessive photo records and with luck came up with the one above with the labels showing. So, not only do I have outdoor sprouts, I even know what they are!

My complete sprouting record is here.

Winter Sowing

I checked every single container today and there is not a damn thing happening in there. Several people in blogville are reporting growth in their WS containers so I'm not sure what's going on. It's warm and sunny today so get to growing, seeds. . .

seed bottles seed bottles close up
Notice the condensation inside these bottles. Its nice and warm in there!

Today I have exciting plans! I'd like to find another 4 or 5 plastic bottles and start seeds for broccoli, a couple types of lettuce, endive and arugula. Well, maybe not so exciting, but its almost like gardening.

one week update

Skippy's Vegetable Garden via Skippy's Vegetable Garden on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

one week
This is the one week update for my winter sown bottles. No sprouts yet. No, I didn't expect there would be any yet. Just thought I'd check. I was impressed with all the condensation droplets inside the bottles. Since the temperature is in the teens now (11 F last night!), it seems to be staying MUCH warmer inside the bottles. Grow seeds, grow!!

Jenga Jugs

My Skinny Garden via My Skinny Garden on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

Since my first round of winter sowing, we've gather about a gazillion more containers and I'm all set for round 2. If you ask Mr. W, he'd have told you I was ready a long time ago. "ARE YOU GOING TO USE THESE THINGS OR WHAT? THEY ARE TAKING OVER THE KITCHEN!" My plan was to wash, vent, and cut the containers as we emptied them and then take them down to the basement for storage. But as you can see they just keep multiplying and I just keep working around them being annoyed and thinking I'll get to it eventually. Maybe I'll get to it this weekend. . . .

Winter Sowing

The Bamboo Jungle via The Bamboo Jungle on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

Now is a good time for me to start my winter sowing. The temps have finally dropped for awhile and I can get out there and begin to sow seeds under mulch or on top of the ground and my pots for winter sowing. I do this with only the seeds that are cold hardy like many different greens and lettuces, radishes, carrots...there are quite a few that you can do this with including tree and flower seeds. . . .

collecting plastic bottles

Skippy's Vegetable Garden via Skippy's Vegetable Garden on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

I'm going to try winter planting this year in plastic milk bottles. (Several bloggers have posted about doing this recently: wintersown.org, My Skinny Garden, Old Roses.) So, since it was recycling day in my town yesterday, I drove around and collected a dozen empty one gallon milk bottles. I have ordered a few types of seeds that I hope will do well with this simple method of planting:
Purple coneflower (Echinacea)
Zebrina hollyhock
Rudbeckia

I'm wondering if any vegetables/herbs would do well:
onions (from seed)
dill
lettuce
beets

Operation Winter Sowing Is Underway!

My Skinny Garden via My Skinny Garden on 1969-12-31, 19:00:00

The good news is that I finally got off my ass and did it! I have to be honest - winter sowing was not very fun. I had to fill the containers in the basement since it was too cold outside. What a mess I made in the Garden Cave. . . .
